As technology and affordability limits have been raised, Bangladesh has now again decided to invest in US Spec First Quality New Build locomotives - and in large numbers as well. Former sales and maintenance made by this US manufacturer to Bangladesh Railway (BR) has been very positive, resulting in current batch being sold. These will be the first Broad Gauge US locomotives supplied to Bangladesh, since BR decided to convert old MG lines to BG standard.

Bangladesh Railways has ordered 40 EMD GT42ACL broad-gauge locomotives from Progress Rail—the first broad-gauge locomotives the company has supplied to Bangladesh.

Rated at 3,250 braking horsepower and equipped with the EM2000™ microprocessor control and AC traction, the locomotives “will provide significant fuel efficiency advantages, lower emissions, the latest safety features, as well as notable haulage capacity and reliability,” the company said.

“Progress Rail, through our historic EMD brand, delivered our first meter-gauge locomotive to Bangladesh Railway in 1953,” said Progress Rail CEO Billy Ainsworth. “Since then, we have supplied more than 150 meter-gauge locomotives directly and through partners to the region. We are honored to be chosen again by the railway to assist in the future growth and development of Bangladesh, this time with an important focus on the broad-gauge rail network.”

“The 40 broad-gauge locomotives will be critical to the growth and improved efficiency of Bangladesh Railway,” Additional Director General Rolling Stock of Bangladesh Railway Md Shamsuzzaman said. “Progress Rail has supplied locomotives to Bangladesh Railways for more than 60 years, and we look forward to working with Progress Rail on the delivery of these 40 state-of-the-art locomotives.”

I sincerely hope that BR has taken steps to train local engineers in maintaining these locos because they are SO FAR AHEAD of the present technological curve existing locally.

BR also ordered MG locos from Hyundai Rotem (every year they order couple dozen it seems).

Bangladesh Railway orders metre-gauge locomotives
22 Feb 2019

BANGLADESH: Hyundai Rotem has been awarded a contract to supply a further 20 diesel–electric locomotives to Bangladesh Railway.

The US$80m order signed on February 20 is being supported by the Export-Import Bank of Korea. The 100 km/h metre-gauge mixed-traffic locomotives with air-conditioned cabs are to be produced at Changwon in South Korea for delivery from 2021.

The latest order follows on from a 41bn won contract for 10 locomotives which was signed last May, and a US$239m order for a further 70 locos agreed in October 2018.

Hyundai Rotem supplied 39 locomotives of Class 2900 to BR in four builds between 1999 and 2013. Built under licence from EMD, these are based on the 16-strong Type GT18L-2 locos built by General Motors Canada in 1988 as Class 2600.

In January this year BR awarded EMD’s current owner Progress Rail a US$135 million contract to supply 40 diesel locomotives from the USA for use on its 1 676 mm gauge routes.

Some more images of this advanced loco (EMD GT42AC).

Similar US Market and International locomotives using the EMD 710 engine (cab configurations and chassis length will vary for each railways requirements).

But I read govt. have plane to convert all meter gauge to broad gauge line eventually . we need to replace many engine as many engine are 30+ years old and already over lived their economic life .

The plan is to convert all Meter Gauge lines to Broad Gauge in another fifteen or so years. Between now and then, we will still end up needing Meter Gauge locos, freight and passenger carriages.

Average age of locos is around fifteen years and engines can still be overhauled (they are not gauge dependent). So by that time, old engines of MG locos can be used in shunting by replacing engines in existing broad gauge shunters or as the US market calls them - 'switchers'.

This has been long time practice in all Railways for hundreds of years. Older worn out locos do shunting/switching duty by moving around rolling stock (carriages and wagons) in yards. Until the old locos slowly die.

How much do these cost?

I'd say $2 Million ex factory for each - without counting graft paid to Bangladesh Railway personnel, which will be shared with higher ups, all the way to the top.

I stand corrected. The contract was all-in $135 Million for 40 locomotives. A large part (more than 1/3rd I'm sure) was graft.

This is trickle down economics, graft reaches all the way to lowest position in the chain !

True. :-)

Interestingly, these are Broad Gauge Freight locomotives and by the time they all arrive, they should be able to use the dual gauge lines to Chittagong, Payra and Mongla, which should be ready by mid-point delivery of these locos in 2025-26. The first few should get here by next year for Mongla Container Traffic. Payra line is being built right now.

I corrected the price, please see my original post.
