Bangladesh: Man Defends Razing 500-Year Old Hindu Temple

Bangladesh: Man Defends Razing 500-Year Old Hindu Temple

February 25, 2012

A Muslim businessman has defended his demolition of a 500-year-old Hindu temple in Moulvibazar district, saying he rightfully owned the land on which the temple stood.

Local Hindus filed a complaint with authorities over the incident, which reportedly took place on February 16.

Mohammad Sufi Mian, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, said the 1.33 acre plot of land where the temple stood was purchased by his father in 1975.

“My father bought this land long ago. No one said anything when we broke down the already ruined temple. Now some people are conspiring against me,” he said.

Members of the Hindu community who asked not to be named out of fear for their safety said Mian was politically influential and that they believed he paid off authorities not to investigate the destruction of the temple.

They allege that Mian and more than a dozen other men razed the temple, which was built by Ramshongkor Sharma Chowdhury, according to the only family heir in Bangladesh, Ranjit Sharma Chowdhury.

He added that the rest of his family settled in India after the partition of the sub-continent in 1947.

Mohammad Abdullah, officer in charge at the Srimangal police station, initially declined to comment on the issue but later acknowledged receiving a complaint.

“We have received the written complaint and are now trying to arrest the offender.”

Bangladesh land law prohibits the purchase or sale of land or property belonging to religious prayer houses or institutions such as mosques, temples, churches or pagodas.

Chowdhury said the temple sat on land that his family had designated for charitable works.

“One of my cousins … borrowed money from Lichu Mien [father of Mohammad]. Unable to pay the debt, he … registered the property for Lichu Mian and left the country.”

Chowdhury said Mian’s claims to the land were baseless, as property records from 2000 showed the land and temple was used by Hindu people in the area and that Chowdhury was named as caretaker of the temple.

Moulvibazar district public prosecutor ASM Azadur Rahman said the whole process of land sale was illegal.

“The law of the land forbids buying and selling of property belonging to a temple. Even if the land of the temple was sold and registered to someone else, it is invalid according to land law,” he said.

What a piece of crap!!! At first a hindu man sold the land to the muslim man in 1975 for unable to pay the debt and fled to the bharat mata and now as the person is now trying to restore the land all the hue n cry started. If sold of temple was really illegal then when that malu registered the land to that man for unable to pay his debt n fled to India why these hindus did not protested at that time.

Another funny accusation the man do BNP but got political backings. What a load of cr@p. I am really feeling sorry for the man as a group Hindus cheated huge number of bangladeshis during n after 1971.

.
The bigger question is, who was in charge of the government agency that let a private individual buy a 500 year old temple?
These kinds of things need to be protected by the government to prevent things like this from happening.

Does that make sense to you, If it is illegal to sell it is as well illegal to buy and the purchase or sale is null and void.

read the above sentences and try and understand them and the hindus u r referring to are as much as BD citizens as the Mian is.

The hindus didnt protest because most probably they didnt sell the temple in the first place

And for the second part, my family lost 3/4 of all the land we owned, during and after 1971, even though my family stayed behind and my uncle fought in 1971.

Furthermore 500 years is a lot of time, no matter what the establishment on the land, it does not deserves to be torn down.

If the deal itself was illegal according to BD law then both parties are guilty.

PS:all hindus in bangladesh should be allowed to migrate to india....after reading comments of bangladeshi ultra islamists nuts on this forum i worry about their safety..

I have read and addressed all the issue. In 1975 hardly there was any law and this is sold by one of the hindu for unable to pay the debt and fled to india told by hindus itself..

The land was sold in 1975, so it is irrelevant what a document says from 2000.

If the hindu knows about the dealing of 1975 then why they remain quite all along??

Is it not to facilitate the cheating against that man!!! Is not it???

Most sickening part of that hindus claim is that the guy do BNP but politically influencial during awami league's time.

we do a lot of Sh1t in the forums, that does not reflect how they behave in their real life

Have u bought or sold any property ever, If the property sale in 1975 was legal, the land records in 2000 would have mentioned the sale of property to Mian, which clearly shows that what that guy is claiming is false and the sale and purchase he is mentioning is not legal.

We are still not sure whether it is 500 year old tample in reality. If it is really so it would have become a historical place at the 1st place.

2nd how you have lost your land!!! If it is part of land grabbing it is a very common phenomena in Bangladesh. In villages these sort of activity happen mostly. But in big cities also. One of my aunt's father owned and still own a big chunk of land in Panthapath but they stayed most of their time outside. But in between the time a group of people made some fake document and claimed the land. As most of my aunt's family member live outside they are likely to loose the land.

This has nothing to do whether anyone is hindu or muslim.

But my grandfather was cheated by a hindu back in 1971 when by trusting him my grand father bought the biggest market of our home district with all of his savings without proper paper work during the war. That hindu man said he will never back to Bangladesh. But after the war he again came back and sold the property again and then went to India again. N these sort of activity happened a lot during that day n this incident is one of such example.

So the guy bought it in 1975 and finlly decides to demolish it in 2012? Dont you smell something fishy here?

How can 1 guy sell a temple? Every temple is owned by a freaking commitee, even in 1975

They remained quite cos, IT WASNT FREAKING DEMOLISHED!!!!!

AL and BNP has always exchanged position frequently, doesnt matter who is in power.

Well fine, so u support the destruction of 500 year old temple Mr.captain planet?

If it is in your private land then you can not dictate what needs to be done with that. But this has nothing to do supporting destruction of tample.

The man chowdhury acknowledged his cousin unable to pay the loan registered the land to the the accused peron n left the country.

My question is why he remained silent at that time when his cousin did this before leaving the country??

When the man who purchased the land trying to restore the land why all these hue n cry???

N if it is really a 500 year old tample then it should have been declared a historical site long ago by the government n even hindus never asked to do so.

N last of all it was a ruin, not a functional temple n I think for a ruin the law does not apply.
