Ruling Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam today stressed the needs for establishing land and rail routes with China for mutual benefits.

Referring Chinese president Xi Jinping's upcoming visit to Bangladesh, the AL leader said the issue of road and rail links would come up for discussion during the visit. Xi Jinping is scheduled to pay a state visit to Bangladesh on October 14.

"Bangladesh had a land route to China a long time ago. If road and rail link can be re-established, not only Bangladesh but also India would be benefited," Ashraf, also Public Administration minister, said.

He was addressing at a programme at BMA auditorium, organised by Bangladesher Samyabadi Dal with its general secretary and former minister Dilip Barua in the chair, marking the Chinese 67th National Day.

Branding upcoming China president's visit a 'historic' one, he said existing friendly relations between the two countries would be more cemented with the visit. "Dhaka waited to accord him a warm reception."

"Our relation is as old as the history of ancient Chinese and Indian civilisations date back to and it is more empathic than political in nature . . . the relations continued until the date for mutual benefit and economic development," Ashraf said.

Political Councilor to the Chinese Ambassador in Bangladesh Yang Jao Hui, Ganotantri Party's General Secretary Shahadat Hossen and Politburo member of Lutfur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.

But Bangladesh does not share any borders with China so it must pass through India and Nepal

Not through Nepal. They don't have land route to China. They are surrounded by India on three sides just like us. Himalayas put a natural border between Nepal and China.

I am not sure if Mr. Ashraf, the Minister, knows that there had not any road communication between GAUR and Beijing during historical times. It was a sea route that stretched over 5,000 kms. Obviously, this Awami League guy is talking of a connection through India's north east. This is not a feasible route because of a rough terrain in the NE.

However, people will love to see the realization of a road link via Burma.

What a brave nation they are ...I mean Nepal..lots of respect for them.
So through Sikkim...But I guess now China and Nepal are building a land route through the mountains.

another awami league lie brought you by awami league propaganda mouthpiece Riyad.

This is a statement of a person who does not have any power. India will never let it slave awami league set up link with China. This is just publicity stunt to cover awami league crime.

Impossible. India will never ever let it happen. Eye wash.

To those who are saying that India will never let it happen, remember that India's NE benefits a hell lot and it would impove relations between India and China and further influence trade and bring more stablity to the region...

India should not have an issue with this.

All agreed. But an shorter economical route? Even Bhutan and Sikkim and Arunachal are surrounded by Himalayas. The Himalayas take an U turn and sadly ends up on Indo-burma border, and that closes shortest BD-india-burma route.

However expensive long route is available.

Tibet gives upper hand to China over India for being a gateway to Nepal and Bangladesh
For years, India has occupied 60 to 70 per cent of Nepal's total trade while China has only 10 per cent.

Superior infrastructure in Tibet will provide China an “upper hand” over India by being a “gateway” to Nepal and Bangladesh for greater trade and investments, Chinese media said Thursday.

“The competition of China and India over building railways in Nepal will influence the future development of Nepal and Bangladesh. It will also bring more challenges to Tibet,” an article in the state-run Global Times here said today.

“In the next decade, if India continues on its high growth track and speeds up the development of infrastructure and manufacturing, this will impose multi-dimensional pressure on China, of which Tibet will bear the brunt,” it said.

Fortunately, as the central government has attached great importance and offered considerable support to the region,

“Tibet has gained the upper hand over India in terms of infrastructure development and has established sound economic cooperation relations with neighbouring provinces and cities”, it said.

How to further open up Tibet exploit its advantages over India to deal with challenges and exercise an influence over the region while maintaining Tibet’s stability needs policy support, it said.

“It also requires coordination among all western provinces, cities and autonomous regions,” it said.

India and Nepal are linked by comparatively good roads. For years, India has occupied 60 to 70 per cent of Nepal’s total trade while China has only 10 per cent.

During his visit to India, Nepal’s new Prime Minister Prachanda revealed that the two countries would discuss the possibility of India helping build a railway connecting Mechi and Mahakali, it said.

“If this comes true, a network not only connecting India, but also Tibet and Bangladesh will be formed,” it said.

The article said Tibet is emerging as an important part of the China-initiated “One Belt and One Road” (Silk Road) initiative.

“Geographically, as a hub of critical value in connecting China and South Asia, the autonomous region is playing an increasingly important role in regional networks with the acceleration of India’s development and the boosting of Sino-Indian economic relations,” it said.

“Over 200 kms northeast of Bhairawa, a Nepali city close to the border with India, is Nepal’s capital Kathmandu. 100 kilometers northward from Kathmandu is Kodari, a border crossing from Nepal into China. The three cities make up one of the most important passageways connecting China and the Indian Subcontinent,” it said.

The other side of the border from Kodari is Zhangmu, a Chinese customs town and port of entry in Tibet.

The town accounts for around 82 per cent of bilateral trade between China and Nepal and 90 per cent of that between Tibet and Nepal, it said.
