Initially it would be unstable but with times vegetation will grow and the land will become more stable with more silt washing up and mangrove forest taking over the island. To accelerate the process Bangladesh govt is creating Mangrove forest since 1970s in the coastal areas. Now we have more than 1500 sq. km planted Mangrove forest in newly emerged islands and shore lines in the coast of Bangladesh.Wouldn’t this land be highly unstable and at risk to erosion? It would be a mudflat at best, right?
The importance of Mangrove forest for Bangladesh can not be overstated.
1. Mangrove forest's root system stabilize silt on the coastal land and gradually elevate the shoreline. This is very much beneficial to counter possible sea level rise.
2. Mangrove forest break the intensity of Hurricane and Cyclone by acting as the first line of defence. Thus hugely reduces fatalities and property damages.
3. It is one of richest biodiversity hotspots in the world, sheltering hundreds of species of reptiles, mammals, birds etc.
Bangladesh is fortunate to own the largest Mangrove forest in the world. The Sunderban.
