Local ceramic goods exporters have taken initiatives to explore new markets, industry leaders said.
As part of the move, leaders of ceramic exporters recently visited Latin American countries, Russia and South Africa.
"We want to increase export of our products to new destinations. For that recently we visited some countries," executive director of Paragon Ceramic industries Ltd Md Ashek Alam told the FE Sunday.
He said "ceramic products' export is now fully dependent on the US and the European Union markets. It is very risky for us as recession or something like that may occur any time."
"We are seriously searching for new markets across the globe to ensure a sustainable export," Mr Alam added.
He said they have invited new buyers to visit their ceramic industry and compare the local goods with those of other countries.
Many of them have already made their visits to Bangladesh accordingly, he said adding "In the meantime, we have received a good number of orders from the new destinations including few Latin American countries, Russia and South Africa."
Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Shinepukur Ceramics Ltd Rizvi Ul Kabir said western countries are the main destinations of our products which are going through an economical crisis.
Hr said for financial meltdown has slowed down the exports of Bangladeshi ceramic goods to US and EU countries.
"So, the industry is looking for new destinations," he said.
He said they had to pay a high tariff to export ceramic products to some of new countries like Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Russia and South Africa, which is a big barrier for expanding business there.
He has urged the authority concerned to negotiate with the emerging markets to reduce import duty.
Bangladesh exports ceramic products to about 50 countries including USA, UK, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Chile, industry people said.
At least 75 per cent of the total exports of the products go to Europe, about 15 per cent to the US market and remaining 10 per cent to other markets, they added.
Ceramics export of Bangladesh witnessed negative growth in the last financial year due to an economic crisis in Europe, the biggest export destination.
Ceramic exports brought $33.75 million in the financial year 2011-12, down by more than 10 per cent from that of the previous year, according to Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
Earnings from ceramics export stood at $14.62 million during July-November period of this financial year, down by 2.66 per cent from that of the corresponding period of the last financial year.
EPB data show ceramics export target was missed by 3.88 per cent in the first five months of the current financial year.
