Govt’s highest focus on Coast Guard ‘to protect marine resources’

The government has given the highest importance to Bangladesh Coast Guard boosting its strength to protect the country's maritime resources as Bangladesh has resolved maritime disputes with Myanmar and India.
"A message has been sent out to everybody that no one will go unchallenged if they enter Bangladesh water territory (illegally)," said State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam.
He said the government will continue to invest in Coast Guard to make it even stronger.
The State Minister was talking to diplomatic correspondents while witnessing the exercise of recently-commissioned CGS Tajuddin in the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday.
On August 4, 2016, Bangladesh Coast Guard procured ex-Italian Navy Ship SIBILLA which was later commissioned by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on January 12 this year.
Shahriar Alam said the Coast Guard has been playing its strong role in preventing smuggling and similar syndicate who finance terrorism and militancy.
He said Bangladesh is open to have cooperation on protection of marine resources and sea security protecting Bangladesh's national interest.
Shahriar Alam said the recent inclusion of two submarines helped Navy improve its ranking jumping from 137 to 46.
Responding to a question, he said the government procured survey ship for assessing maritime resources. "We need more investment. The private sector can also come forward."
Appreciating the role of Coast Guard, the State Minister said fishing trawlers from neighbouring country used to enter Bangladesh water in the past for illegal fishing. "This trend has come down to almost a zero level."
He said the Coast Guard needs many small gunboats, and negotiations are on with Italy and Chittagong Dry Dock to have such boats.
Deputy Director General of Bangladesh Coast Guard Commodore Yahya Syed said various efforts are on to strengthen Coast Guard.
He said two more ships from Italy will arrive here by August next which will further strengthen the force.
Describing the role of Coast Guard, Syed said they have the same message for all - 'no one will go unchallenged'.
The Coast Guard officials said the Prime Minister is very focused for a stronger Coast Guard considering growing importance.
The roles of Coast Guard include controlling piracy, illegal trafficking, protecting fishery, oil, gas, forest resources and environmental pollution in Bangladesh waters and coastal areas, ensuring overall security and law and order through security assistance to sea ports, conducting relief and rescue operation in the coastal areas during natural calamities.
