Bangladesh border guards kills Indian farmer in West Bengal

New Delhi/Kolkata: A 40-year-old farmer was today killed and a child was injured in "unprovoked" firing by suspected Bangladeshi border guarding force personnel in north Bengal, officials said.

The incident took place around 9:30 am in Uttar Dinajpur area of West Bengal, they said, adding one person identified as Mohammed Saeed (40) was killed while a 14-year-old boy Soor Alam was injured. He was admitted to a hospital in Raiganj.

A Border Security Force (BSF) patrol reported to its headquarters in Delhi that three rounds were fired and it suspected the hand of the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).

After the incident, the BSF demanded a flag meeting with its counterparts. "We have sent our Inspector General for the flag meeting," BSF Additional Director General (East) BD Sharma told PTI.

BSF guards the 4,000-km-long Indo-Bangladesh frontier and has taken seriously this incident of firing as it has happened after a long time, the sources added.

Bangladesh is a friendly country. The death is sad, but nothing can be said until a full investigation is concluded.

Hopefully this was a case of mistaken identity.

Bangla border guards kill Indian; local capture BGB constable

AGARTALA: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel shot dead an Indian villager early Friday morning at the Tripura border. Local Indian villagers, following the killing, captured a head constable of the BGB, who, according to them, attempted to drag the body into Bangladesh territory.

While Indian villagers and authorities claimed slain Shah Alam was a farmer, BGB officials said he was a Phensedyl (cough syrup) smuggler. The incident took place at Tarapukur village under Jatrapur police station in the border area, about 70 km from Agartala, around 6.30 am.

Tension ran high on both sides of the border following the Shah Alam's killing and the capture of the constable, who belongs to BGB's 33 battalion. Senior BSF and police officials rushed to the spot and a flag meeting between the two border guards was called.

Sources said the constable, Lutfur Rahaman, has been detained and is currently in the custody of the BSF. He is likely to be arrested and produced in court.

The incident comes close on the heels of a recent controversy over BSF highhandedness along the West Bengal border where Indian border guards were accused of torturing a Bangladesh citizen.

Shah Alam Miah (40) hailed from Tarakapur in the newly-demarcated Sipahijala district, police said. "Shah Alam was a farmer and he went to work on his field early in the morning at around 6.30 am, where BGB personnel fired at him, killing him on the spot," said DIG Nepal Das.

Things came to a head when four BGB personnel entered Indian territory and attempted to take away Alam's body to Bangladesh, as, by this time, villagers who heard the gunshots had rushed to the spot. They managed to capture BGB head constable Lutfur Rahaman. Three other BGB guards escaped, taking away Lutfur's firearms.

SP (Sipahijala district) SR Das, was monitoring the situation. A massive deployment of BSF personnel has been made along the border. Additional police reinforcement was also rushed to the village. "The situation is under control," a senior official at Jatrapur police station said.

Sources from Bangladesh said over telephone that the BGB sector commander of Comilla, Col Rustam Ali, claimed the slain Indian was actually a Phensedyl smuggler. Smuggling of cough syrup is rampant along the Indo-Bangla border. Bangladeshi youths are seriously addicted to Phensedyl.

Col Ali said the BGB personnel were patrolling the area following an input that a consignment of Phensedyl would be smuggled into their territory. The BGB personnel shot dead a 'smuggler', he said, adding the latter's accomplices took Lutfur Rahaman away.

How in the world the angry mob didn't kill the BGB guy. I am surprised.

Things like this are relation spoilers. Both countries need to solve this earlier and punish the guilty.

And what with theory of BGB shooting the smuggler and his accomplices took shooter hostage ??? Man you need to put up something believable. Why in the world he didnt shot others ??? And was he alone on patrol ??? Where was rest of the patrolling party ???
