Bangladesh Army to monitor parliamentary polls

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad on Wednesday said the Election Commission would seek army deployment for the upcoming parliamentary polls just as troops had been deployed during all previous general elections.

“Army has been deployed in all elections since 1973…We will seek army’s assistance this time, too,” the CEC told reporters at a briefing after a meeting of the commission at the EC Secretariat.

“It is not possible to maintain law and order in all 300 parliamentary constituencies with the police force and government security agencies. The number of voters and polling centres has also increased in the meantime,” he said.

Mihir Sarwar Morshed, deputy secretary at the EC, later told the Dhaka Tribune that the areas and period of army deployment would be fixed considering the prevailing situation as reported by the intelligence.

He pointed out that army had been deployed for five days during the fifth parliamentary elections.

Asked if he could hint a tentative timeframe of army deployment, he said the commission usually did not disclose the matter.

“After the meeting with law enforcement agencies, the commission will decide – considering the situation how many troops to deploy where and when,” he said.
