Poor management, distribution caused blackout: Muhith

Finance Minister AMA Muhith has blamed “poor distribution and transmission” system, although the government is tight-lipped about the reason behind Saturday’s massive outage.


“The government is planning to upgrade the small plants to 1,000MW capacity,” he added.

He spoke to the press Sunday after a meeting with Power Secretary Monwar Islam.

“Our transmission and distribution is very poor. Distribution problem caused yesterday’s (Saturday) crisis,” he said, adding: “Our transmission, too, is weak.”

Bangladesh suffered its worst blackout in history after the National Grid collapsed Saturday morning. Millions were left in the dark as the situation did not improve until evening.

Power supply resumed after night fell, with the situation stabilising by midnight.

The country had suffered similar power outages in 2003 and 2007. Asked if power failure might recur, Muhith said such problems occur once in 10-15 years.

He said it would be some time before losses caused by Saturday’s outage were ascertained.

“There was no problem from India’s side; the 400MW line had no problem, either,” he said. “There was a transmission problem on our side.”

Muhith said he had called the power secretary to learn about the overall situation and make plans.

“I wanted to know why the supply was 7,000MW when the capacity was 11,000MW. It has to be at least 80 percent.
