Bahrain is keen to open its diplomatic mission in Bangladesh to expand bilateral relations, a foreign ministry media release said on Sunday.
It said Chair of Bangladesh-Bahrain Parliamentary Friendship Group Mahmoud Youssef Almahmoud and two other Members of the Persian Gulf countrys Council of Representatives (Parliament) informed Foreign Minister Dipu Moni of their governments intention during a courtesy call on her.
The release, however, did not mention any reciprocation of the Foreign Minister when the MPs informed her about their governments keenness.
According to the release, the Minister underscored that there is a special relation between Bangladesh and Bahrain.
The delegation felt that there were plenty of scopes to expand trade and investment between the two countries since Bangladesh was a major exporter of readymade garments, medicines and ceramics to different countries including the US and those in Europe.
The diplomatic relations between the two countries began in 1974 when Bahrain recognised independent Bangladesh.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh established a resident mission in Bahrain on February 28, 1983.
The country was one of the top five foreign destinations for Bangladeshi manpower in 2012, according to the Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU).
Bangladeshis working in the Gulf country remitted $298.46 million in 2011-2012 fiscal year.
The Foreign Minister requested the Bahraini MPs to persuade their government to recruit more skilled and semi-skilled manpower including doctors, engineers and nurses from Bangladesh for mutual benefits of the two countries.
About 100,000 Bangladeshi are currently working in Bahrain and they are law abiding and hard working, she mentioned.
The Minister also urged the delegation to encourage Bahraini government and entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh.
The delegation expressed their deep condolences for the deaths of 13 Bangladeshi nationals in a recent fire accident in Manama.
The media release said Youssef informed the Foreign Minister that people responsible for the accident would be brought to justice and the Bahrain government was taking all measures for sending back the bodies to Bangladesh.
The delegates also made a courtesy call on Speaker Advocate Abdul Hamid and had a bilateral meeting with the Members of Parliament of the Bangladesh-Bahrain Parliamentary Friendship Group.
They will leave on Monday ending their week-long visit.
