Today baby boom or population explosion is one of the major problems faced by India. India is second largest in the world after china. After the entrance of medical science, the morality rate has appreciably declined and life-expectancy is increased. These population trends have made the matter complicated because it is being a problem on countrys economy and natural resources.
According to 1996, Indias population stood at 953 million. As per the 1991 census Indias population was 846.3 million. At the present the rate of growth in our population it is feared that India would leave china behind because of the increasing number of babies has set alarm bells ringing. The rapid growth of population has increased the problem of unemployment, shelterlessness, starvation, illiteracy, poverty, scarcity, sanitation, pollution. The explosion in population has nullified all our economic and developmental achievements. The backward and the most populated states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh etc have abnormally high rate of population growth.
India is still in dark as far as population matters are concerned. We have to stabilize population according to our resources. The resources may be family planning, budgetary allocation and welfare in each successive 5-year plan. The leaders should rise to realize the urgency to check the baby boom. They should come forward with a firm, and specific result oriented national policy on population and family planning.
