Babar hunting rhinoceros near Bigram (Peshawar) - Mughal miniature.
Mughal Emperor Babar in the beginning of his memoir, Babarnama, recorded: “On Friday, the 1st Sefer in the year 932, when the sun was in Sagittarius (1525 AD, November 17th), I set out on my march to invade Hindustan.” On reaching Peshawar, Babar went on a hunting trip in the marshes surrounding Peshawar in the areas irrigated by the Kabul River.

(Note: Indian rhinoceros - Rhinoceros unicornis - is now regionally extinct in Pakistan)

Well in Pakistan it is I believe.

Pakhtunkhwa was once a lot greener than what it is now.
sorry, i thought you said indian rhinos,i think earlier local rulers and British are also responsible for the extinction of wildlife in subcontinent.

In his biography Jahangir mentioned that he ordered the execution of a newly wed groom bcz he came in between him and his hunt.

Why does not Pakistan import a couple from India and start a breeding program in a declared wildlife sanctuary.

There were Hippopotamus, Rhinoceros. Elephants, Lions, Tigers, Cheetas, Buffaloes, etc during the Middle Ages but became extinct due to hunting and habitat loss. I don't think Pakistan has any rewilding plans for its National Parks.

This ignorance and lack of knowledge about wildlife is the reason these beautiful animals are now extinct from our country. They once roamed free until 1600s.

Firstly, people will complain about land being created as National Park instead of being distributed to poor farmers. Secondly, people will complain about spending so much money on animals and park wardens who will protect against against poachers. Thirdly, Pakistani politicians, generals, feudal land lords and Arab Shaikhs will legally or illegally hunt these animals.

Babur was very cruel human being.

Rhinoceros have been hunted from Mughals to British to Rajas. Even 25 years ago big game hunting was popular among rich and famous. Now we have animal rights and rewilding proposals.

Does Pakistan have no wildlife protection programs whatsoever and/or declared National Parks?
