Avijit Roy is an icon who transgressed religious and racial differences to epitomise the spirit of humanity.


An advocate of modern sciences, the writer-blogger created the online platform Mukto-mona which championed free-thinking.

Even after death, the writer-blogger stamps his love for science leaving behind his body for medical research.

The US-based Bangladeshi expatriate was an engineer for a software company. Alongside his job, he also wrote in newspapers and blogs.

One of his books was published in this year’s Ekushey Book Fair. Avijit had returned to Bangladesh on Feb 16 to attend the fair and to visit his family, including his ailing mother, after two years.

A strong voice against communalism, Avijit had been speaking out against religious fanaticism and superstitions using scientific facts. He had been threatened several times for writing against communalism and religious radicalism.
Avijit and his wife, fellow blogger Rafida Ahmed Bonya, were brutally attacked on the footpath adjacent to the Suhrawardy Udyan on the other side of Milan Chattor on Thursday. He died at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital while his seriously injured wife is undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital.

Thursday’s attack bore a striking similarity to the one on legendary writer Humayun Azad in February 2004. Azad was also returning home from the Ekushey Book Fair, when he was hacked with machetes by radical militants.

Islamist group 'Ansar Bangla 7' in a series of tweets from its Twitter handle has described the murder of Avijit Roy as an achievement. One such tweet described the murder as a punishment for Avijit's "crime against Islam".

The first tweet appeared around midnight on Thursday, after the attack. Messages included "Allahu Akbar... A great success today here in Bangladesh.”

After finishing his school, Avijit, son of Ajay Roy, a former physics professor of Dhaka University, got admitted to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1990.

He started working for Otobi after attaining degree in mechanical engineering.
He went to Singapore after getting a scholarship for a doctorate degree and then took up a research scope at a university in the US.

Avijit and Bonya’s only daughter Trisha has recently got admission into a university in the US.

People from all walks of life flocked in front of Raju Sculpture in Dhaka University to protest against the gruesome killing.

The body of the deceased writer-blogger will be kept in front of Aparajeyo Bangla in Dhaka University on Sunday for paying last respects.

His body will be donated to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital by his family as per his wish.

for years, bangladesh had the "bishwa ijtema", the largest gathering of mullahs and burqas... it seems that in 2010, there were five million attendees... this will certainly have an influence on the weaker-minded of bangladeshis... i don't know if the ijtema is still permitted.

the recent backlash by bangladesh citizens against the jamaatis must follow the pattern of the egypt citizens and government and military who have acted against the ikhwaani dogs.

ijtema-type gatherings have increased in india, especially southern india... earlier it was zakir naik, now it is the pfi group... bangladesh must act against such munafiq mullah mentality before it is too late... the first action would be to stop relay of tv channels like "peace tv" or "etc urdu" or "zee salaam".

tv channel topic = how many bangladeshi satalite channel you saw in your country? if you live in kolkata then it,s ok you can see some bangladeshi TV channel but not all. but we bangladeshi people can see every indian channel if we want to saw. if BD gov is going to band some channel it,s 1st list is star plus and star jalsa.

নিউজবিডি৭.কম: ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ক্যাম্পাসের অন্যতম জনাকীর্ণ এলাকা। পাশে একুশের বইমেলা। সময় রাত আট টা। হাজার হাজার মানুষ মেলা থেকে ফিরছে। তখনই লেখক ও ব্লগার অভিজিৎ রায় ও তার স্ত্রীকে উপর্যুপরি কোপায় দুই যুবক।
প্রত্যক্ষদর্শীরা জানান, হামলাকারীরা দুই মিনিটেই কাজ শেষ করে দুই দিকে পালিয়ে যায়। একজন সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানের দিকে এবং অন্যজন মিলন চত্বরের দিকে পালায়।

ঘটনায় পুলিশের ভূমিকা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন ওঠেছে। কারণ তাদের ওপর হামলার স্থানটির আশপাশে বেশ কয়েকটি মোড়ে অবস্থান করছিল পুলিশ। হামলাস্থলের মাত্র ২৫ গজ দূরেই পুলিশ ব্যারিকেড ও সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যানে প্রবেশ পথে সাতজন পুলিশ ডিউটিতে ছিল ওই সময়।

ঘটনাস্থল থেকে শাহবাগ থানার দূরত্ব ২৫০ গজ। পশ্চিমে নীলক্ষেত পুলিশ ফাঁড়ি আর পূর্বে সোহরাওয়ার্দী উদ্যান। রয়েছে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে প্রবেশের সবগুলো পথে পুলিশ চেকপোস্ট।

অভিজিৎ হত্যাকান্ডটি নিয়ে পুলিশের ভূমিকাসহ বেশ কিছু প্রশ্ন সকলের মনে উঁকি দিয়েছে। বিএনপি -জামায়াত যেখানে ঢাকা শহরের কোথাও একটি মিছিল পর্যন্ত বের করতে পারে না সেখানে টিএসসির মত
সুরক্ষিত জায়গায় এই ধরনের কাজ কোন বিরোধী শক্তির পক্ষে করা প্রায় অসম্ভব।

আমাদের অনুসন্ধানে ব্লগার অভিজিৎ হত্যার লোমহর্ষক পরিকল্পনা বেরিয়ে এসেছে। এক ঢিলে এখানে অনেক গুলি পাখি মারা হয়েছে। মূল পরিকল্পনাটি করা হয়েছে আরাফাত এ রহমানের বাসায় যেখানে মোজাম্মেল বাবু প্রায়ই আড্ডা মারতে এবং মদ খেতে আসে। এই বাসায় বসেই এই দুই জন অভিজিৎ হত্যার এই ভয়ংকর পরিকল্পনাটি করেছে।

আমাদের বর্ণনা পড়ে এবং আপনার মনকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেই বুঝতে পারবেন যে বর্ণনাটি শতভাগ ঠিক। বিবেক নামক জিনিসটি এখনও কাজ করছে বলেই শত শত পর্দার ভেতর থেকেও এসব ঘটনা আমাদের পক্ষে বের করে আনা সম্ভব হয়েছে।
আরো মজার কথা হলো, আওয়ামী লীগের জন্যে যখনই এই ধরনের জঙ্গী প্রচারনা দরকার পড়ে , তখনই কিছু জঙ্গী গোষ্ঠী বেরিয়ে আসে। ফেইসবুকে বা টুইটারের একটি একাউন্ট থেকে এই হত্যার দায় স্বীকার করে জঙ্গীরা বিবৃতি দেয়! সেই বিবৃতিকে ফলাও করে এমন ভঙ্গিতে প্রচার করে মোজাম্মেল বাবুদের টিভি চ্যানেল ও পত্রিকা যে এর চেয়ে খাটি কথা ও প্রমাণ আর হতে পারে না।
অভিজিৎকে বাছাই করার পেছনে যে বিষয়গুলি কাজ করেছে সেগুলি হলো
১) তিনি হিন্দু, মুক্তমনা এই ব্লগার নাস্তিক হলেও তার হিন্দু নামটি বিজেপির হিন্দুত্বকে উস্কে দেওয়ার জন্যে খুবই কাজে দিবে। কারন বিজেপির সাম্প্রতিক মতিগতি নিয়ে সরকার খুব দুশ্চিন্তায় পড়ে গেছে। ভারতের নতুন স্বরাষ্ট্র সচিবের সফরের আগে আগে এই হত্যা কান্ডটি অন্য ধরনের ফলাফল এনে দিবে।
২) তিনি আমেরিকার নাগরিক। তার হত্যাকান্ডে জঙ্গীবাদের কার্ডটি জমবে ভালো। পশ্চিমা বিশ্বের একটি অপশক্তির করুণা পেতে এই হত্যাকান্ডটা সরকারকে সহায়তা করবে। জঙ্গীদের দমনে এই সরকারই পশ্চিমাদের দরকার বলে তীক্ষ্ণভাবে অনুভূত হবে।
৩) তিনি মুক্তমনা ব্লগার। এই ধরনের ব্লগার নিহত হলে তা সহজেই ইসলামপন্থীদের ঘাড়ে দোষটি দিয়ে দেয়া যায়। জনগণের চিন্তা এর বাইরে যাবে না।
এই ভয়ংকর ভাবনার নিষ্ঠুর শিকার হয়ে পড়েছে এই অভিজিৎ। সকল মুক্তমনাদের আরেকটু মুক্তভাবেই এই ভাবনাটি ভাবা উচিত। এক সময় তাজউদ্দীন আহমদ মুজিববাহিনীকে প্রচন্ড ভয় পেতেন। তিনি বলেছেন, আমাকে মেরে এই বাহিনী রাজাকারদের নামে চালিয়ে দিবে। সেই মুজিববাহিনীর সন্তান আফ্রিকান মাগুর সদৃশ্য এই গুন্ডা বাহিনী দেশের সকল মানুষকে আতংকে ফেলে দিয়েছে।

এই হত্যা পরিকল্পনাটি সার্বিক সমন্বয়ের দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন ডিজিএফআইয়ের রাজনৈতিক শাখার প্রধান ব্রিগেডিয়ার তাবরিজ শামস। ডিজিএফআইয়ের প্রিন্ট মিডিয়ার পরিচালক কর্ণেল শাম্মী ছিলেন তার বিশেষ সহযোগী হিসাবে। কারন কর্ণেল শাম্মীর জন্ম আজিমপুরে এবং ছোটবেলা থেকেই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এলাকায় থাকায় পুরো এলাকা সম্পর্কে তার বিশেষ ধারনা রয়েছে। অার অপারেশনটি মাঠ থেকে বাস্তবায়নের দায়িত্বে ছিলেন লেঃ কর্ণেল মকসুরুল ও ছাত্র লীগের সাধারন সম্পাদক নাজমুল আলম সিদ্দিকী। বিএনপি নেতা রিয়াজ রহমানের উপর আক্রমন এবং ঢাকা শহরে বিভিন্ন স্থানে পেট্রোল বোমা মারা
সহ সকল অপকর্মের হোতা হচ্ছে এই দুজন।

কাজেই জাতির বিবেকের কাছে আবেদন , কয়েক জন অসুস্থ্য ও ক্রিমিনাল মানুষের জন্যে ষোল কোটি মানুষকে এই বিপদের দিকে টেনে নিবেন না। এমন একটি অবস্থায় আমরা কেউ নিরাপদ থাকবো না। আরো শৃঙ্খলিত হওয়ার আগেই যে যেখানে আছেন সেখান থেকেই আওয়াজ তুলুন, প্রতিবাদ করুন, এদের মুখোশ উন্মোচন করুন। যারা সরকারের বিভিন্ন দায়িত্বে রয়েছেন তারাও ভেবে দেখুন, কী ভয়ংকর দানবকে টিকে থাকতে আপনারা সহায়তা করছেন। এই দানবের ক্যালকুলেশনে পড়ে গেলে অভিজিতের মতো আপনার অথবা আপনার কোন প্রিয়জনের জীবন যে কোন মুহুর্তে চলে যেতে পারে।

সবচেয়ে হতাশার কথা হলো এই অপকর্মে জড়ানো হয়েছে আমাদের গৌরব ও গর্বের সেনাবাহিনীকে। আরাফাত এ রহমান ও মোজাম্মেল বাবুদের নষ্ট চিন্তা বাস্তবায়নে সরাসরি ব্যবহৃত হচ্ছে আমাদের সেনাবাহিনী। বিশ্ব মানবতার আদালতে প্রতিদিন দাঁড় করানো হচ্ছে আমাদের এই সেনাবাহিনীকে ? জাতিসংঘে প্রতিদিনের ব্রিফিংএ আসছে সেনাবাহিনীর কয়েকজন কুলাঙ্গারের এই কুকর্মের কথা।
কয়েক জন নষ্ট মানুষের গরল পান করছে আমাদের পুরো সেনাবাহিনী।

Pragatishil Chhatra Jote, a platform of Leftist student organisations, has called for a strike at Dhaka University for Monday to protest the brutal murder of writer-blogger Avijit Roy.
They demanded immediate arrest and trial of the killers at a press conference at the university’s Modhur Canteen on Saturday.

The organisations also announced plans for serial protest .

Chhatra Union President Hasan Tarek, also the Jote convener, told reporters that the killing of Avijit was an attack on free thinking. “It indicates none of us are safe.”

“If this murder goes unpunished, 40,000 students at this campus will remain insecured,” he added.

The alliance also demanded that the government should ban religion-based politics in Bangladesh.

Avijit and his wife blogger Rafida Ahmed Bonya were hacked by unidentified miscreants near Dhaka University’s TSC on Thursday night.

He died at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital soon after he was rushed there.

Bonya had lost a finger and was seriously injured. She is undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital in the capital.

Avijit was the founder of ‘Mukto-Mona’ blog and used to write against communalism and religious superstitions.

Fundamentalists had threatened him on several occasions for his writings.

His father Prof Ajay Roy, who teaches at Dhaka University, has blamed militants for the attack.
Hasan Tarek said DU teachers, students and staff will don black badges, create a human-chain and take out a procession in protest on Sunday.

The Jote also took out a procession on Saturday to push for their demands.

RU teachers condemn murder

A pro-1971 organisation of the Rajshahi University teachers has condemned Avijit Roy’s murder.

Pragatishil Shikkhok Samaj in a statement on Saturday demanded immediate arrest of the killers and their swift trial.

The statement, signed by the organisation’s Convener Prof Jahidul Islam, also urged everyone to stay united to resist radicals.

“Those who attacked Avijit Roy are against free thinking and progress in this country... They are the communal forces that stand against the ideals of the Liberation War.”

The teachers alleged that the writer’s murder resembles the killings of RU teachers Mohammad Yunus and Shafiul Islam.

sorry to say but the mullah fanaticism in bangladesh is a import from india... all those deobandi and tableeghi idiots from india either visiting bangladesh or sending influencing by other means.

for years, bangladesh had the "bishwa ijtema", the largest gathering of mullahs and burqas... it seems that in 2010, there were five million attendees... this will certainly have an influence on the weaker-minded of bangladeshis... i don't know if the ijtema is still permitted.

the recent backlash by bangladesh citizens against the jamaatis must follow the pattern of the egypt citizens and government and military who have acted against the ikhwaani dogs.

ijtema-type gatherings have increased in india, especially southern india... earlier it was zakir naik, now it is the pfi group... bangladesh must act against such munafiq mullah mentality before it is too late... the first action would be to stop relay of tv channels like "peace tv" or "etc urdu" or "zee salaam".

1. To all the Indians who are linking this heinous act back to ISIS then you are very very wrong Patels! The ISIS would slaughter Jamaat just for wearing Red. Jamaat ideology and ISIS ideology would conflict, no doubt. Jamaat is political group in parliament and the 3rd biggest party infact, ISIS would outright slaughter them for partaking in a democratic system.

Well, anyone who has visited the Boi Mela would know that the site where he was killed is highly guarded by RAB and Police, it's quite startling that the killer escaped away from such a protected area. Besides, from the nature of the killing, it's quite clear that it was a coldblooded murder which was planned for a long time.
