Avery Dennison, Youngone to set up manufacturing unit in Bangladesh

Avery Dennison has launched a manufacturing facility in Bangladesh in partnership with Youngone Corporation.
The 2,052-sqm unit, located in the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) in Chattogram, will enable strong service quality and flexibility to local customers, the partners announced on Sunday.
Chairman and CEO of Youngone Corporation Kihak Sung said the investment in KEPZ will give a competitive edge to Avery Dennison in terms of speed and flexibility to serve its clients with reduced business cost and lead time.

"It gives me immense pleasure to welcome Avery Dennison as one of the investors in Korean EPZ (KEPZ), the leading eco-friendly EPZ in this region. Avery Dennison and Youngone will partner on backward linkage industries for apparel and textile," he said.
In today's fast-paced business world, a "do-it-alone" approach is not the best strategy for growth, Sung said.
Harnessing the strengths and abilities of others from different areas is one of the most strategic ways for businesses to promote innovation and solve complex challenges by merging talent, expertise and technology, he said.
"I'm confident that Avery Dennison, with its high-quality products and international prestige, will grow together with Youngone and other business partners. We'll extend all possible support and cooperation to Avery Dennison to move forward in achieving its business goal."
Highlighting the potential benefits of this project, Vice President and General Manager, South Asia, Avery Dennison Kenny Liu said this manufacturing unit is a remarkable step forward as they expand their capabilities to serve the local market, as well as global customers.
"We thank Youngone for their support to set up this site within the KEPZ, which enables us to better serve Youngone and our Chattogram customers and support their need for speed in today's highly dynamic market," Kenny Liu said.
The KEPZ, set up by Youngone in 1999 on the bank of Karnaphuli, hosts the largest (40Mw) rooftop solar project in Bangladesh, to power industrial activities with renewable energy, while over 2.5 million trees have been planted, covering about 400 species.

The prospects of this garments accessory sector are huge. Every Garments piece needs a bar code tag or label that is compliant with the standards of the retailer that orders it.

Come to think of it, the packages for the bulk packaging needs labels too, sometimes smart RFID labels which lets you know where the package is, physically.

I am happy to note that the Avery/ Youngone manufacturing project is an ongoing one unlike those from the Arab countries that remain only in the pages of the newspapers that print them.

It is most welcome news and I'm flattered.

A template. Foreign investment usually follows after domestic investment picks up. Once exports begin rising, the world cannot afford to neglect your country. This is why domestic investment in Pakistan, too, needs to pick up. Cheap availability of credit is critical in this regard. Sizable leaps in exports quantum would put Pakistan on the radar of potential investors/businesses.

Very well said. All of us in Bangladesh wish Pakistan to turn around and keep doing fast economic development.

But, please expedite also with raising your cotton production part of which may be used internally and a part exported to BD. BD is the homeland for jute and Pakistan is/ was the homeland for cotton.

For another matter, I have read somewhere that not Gwadar but Karachi will remain a more active Port for both Pakistan and China. Is it true?

Cotton production has surprisingly picked up this year (attributed to the development of hybrid seed), unlike the dismal plantation of Cotton last year that forced us to import much of it. I do not believe we would be able to export Cotton as the textile industry has gained a decent momentum and our requirements are considerable. Exporting raw products is never a good idea anyway. We must add value by converting Cotton into textile products and exporting these to get higher returns. Cotton prices in the international market, BTW, are on fire. Even when Pakistan used to produce Cotton in surplus, big plants imported American PIMA, Egyptian Giza, or Cotton from Latin America. These varieties have long fiber staple length, which gives good luster and strength to the textile made through these. We are en route to meeting the 21 billion USD textile export target. Pakistan's representative body of textile manufacturers has announced a 5 billion USD investment in setting up 100 new plants, which would come online by 2022, creating employment for 0.5 million. This investment was made possible due to the availability of cheap credit in the shape of the State bank of Pakistan's low-interest-rate loan facility extended to export industries to spur expansion in the productive capacities in the export sector and increase exportable surpluses after the covid crisis hit the world.

As for the port, Gwadar is not seeing much activity even now, and Karachi is the favored port for trade in Pakistan for now. If Pakistan is to address systemic inequalities that led to the splintering of federation once in 1971, we need to decentralize economic prosperity. The development of alternative economies in economically disenfranchised and less integrated regions is the key to that. In that context, it is critical for us in the broader national interest to develop trade facilities in Gwadar, so the economy in Balochistan's coastal areas comes at par with more developed population centers of the country. CPEC is an unparalleled opportunity to achieve this goal of national integration and more equitable distribution of wealth among federating units of the country. It should be seen as one.

BTW, my Bangladeshi friends tell me that Jute isn't as big as it once was in BD. Most blame corruption for the destruction of the jute economy.

I think Balochistan needs investment in mine extraction. All the minerals that the internet sources say, need to be extracted in Balochistan where agricultural land is in short supply. Gwadar Port will be busy with the opening of many mines there. Baloch people will also get jobs.

However, I have a feeling that there are people who oppose the development of Balochistan unless their wealth is directly controlled/ shared by some people from some other Province. This issue must be solved for the sake of fairness. However, I believe a country's wealth belongs to the govt and the entire population.

Quotation from the Internet:

"Balochistan is the richest mineral province of Pakistan. The Chagai-Raskoh magmatic arc and Indus Suture are the richest metallogenic zones in the Balochistan province and also in Pakistan, however the Sulaiman and Kirthar are trying to lead in sedimentary minerals".

"Balochistan province has large proven reserves of indigenous iron, copper (associated some gold, silver, molybdenum), lead, zinc, barite, chromite, coal, gypsum, limestone (marble), ochre, silica sand, etc, small deposits of antimony, asbestos, celestite, fluorite, magnesite, soapstone, sulphur, vermiculite, etc."

Yes, your BD friend is correct to say that jute demand has dwindled. The main reason is the use of oil-based plastic goods. This started during the mid-1970s.

Another reason is the nationalization of the jute industry immediately after the 1971 war. The initiator was Mujib and his BAL Party. BAL wanted to employ many of its supporters in this sector. For the last 50 years, the jute industry kept on losing money. Only recently, the GoB has stopped its operation.

I believe a day to come when the entire world would again come back to jute goods only because of pollution that the plastics industries create.
