GAUHATI: A mob armed with shotguns attacked the Chauldhua village in northeast India, killing at least 10 people in a long-simmering land dispute, police said on Thursday.

The attackers fired indiscriminately on Wednesday evening in Chauldhua village in northern Assam state, said a resident Indrashwar Das.

"A large mob attacked us with guns, everyone was surprised," said Das, who was shot in the leg.

"I saw people falling and I ran."

The gunmen came from the neighboring Arunachal Pradesh state, police said.

It took officers several hours to access the densely forested area, said the police official Sanjukta Parashar.

The Supreme Court has taken up the case.

The dispute dates back to 1987, when Arunachal Pradesh state was created and the village was declared to be in Assam.

There have been similar attacks before, but Wednesday's was the most deadly.

Northeast India, linked to the rest of the country by a narrow land bridge, has seen decades of friction among ethnic and separatist groups, although some rebels have started peace talks with the government.

More than 10,000 people have lost their lives to unrest in the the tea and oil rich state of Assam over the last two decades
