At least 25 people have been killed and 202 others wounded in a suicide bombing during Friday prayers at a Shia mosque in Kuwait City claimed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant [ISIL] group.

In a message posted on a Twitter account known to belong to the group, ISIL claimed the blast was a work of a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest.

Kuwait's interior ministry said in a statement, carried by state news agency KUNA, that the attack targeted the packed Imam Sadiq mosque during Friday prayers.

Video footage from the scene showed several bodies on the floor of the Imam Sadiq mosque amid debris and clouds of heavy smoke.

Kuwaiti Emir Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah visited the mosque, located just a few buidling away from the country's interior ministry.

An emergency session of parliament has also been called.

Kuwait's Minister of Justice, Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Yaqoub al-Sanea condemned the "terrorist attack" which he said "threatens our security, and aims to fracture the country's unity,

"Kuwait will remain an oasis of security for all groups of Kuwaiti society and all sects. The government is taking many procedures to protect prayers and mosques." al-Sanea told Kuwait's state news agency, KUNA.

Meanwhile, Saad al-Ajmi, Kuwait's former information minister, told Al Jazeera that the attack was a reminder that no country was "immune from terrorism".

Ajmi said Kuwait had "a good record" in its relationship between Sunni and Shia groups, and was a small country with good security without widespread dissent.

However, if a group was responsible, he said: "I think that those who want to tip the whole region ablaze in a sectarian war would be behind this attack because that is their agenda."

The explosion was the first suicide bombing attack on a Shia mosque in the Gulf Arab state, where Sunnis and Shia live side by side with little apparent friction.

This was bound to reach all of Arab world. It will likely get worse, it's up to the people to move the region in different direction but won't be easy.

Kuwait was the only Gulf country not to join the strikes against ISIS. Wonder if this will change?

Hows Saudi-Iran Rivalry going, eh?

Muslims should be united, lenient on each other, and strong together...and our efforts should be to spread Islam, its beautiful culture and traditions outwards.

But instead, every small faction within Islam is fighting/hating the other faction while other religions/cultures from Christian-West influencing us increasingly at the same time.

Great service to Islam ya'll!!!!!!

This extremism and mass violence can instigate a mass apostasy within Islam. When humans are pushed to a certain extreme, they say "fcuk it!".....

This can very well be the beginning of end of Islam.

R.I.P the martyrs.

Unfortunately the one that lost their life are shiites.

We need to do something this filthy world wont spare your life if you are not strong and ready to kick some a$$es.

It's a war of one side against the other waged by the petrodollar from the gulf.

What has this got to do with Iran? Iran was neither the attacker nor the victim here.

If the Sunni dominated governments can not protect Shiites from terrorist attacks, then it's time they demand autonomy and self rule.

.
If the martians attack the earth they will say Iran behind it.

It the Saudi behind all the chaos and the killing without we Muslims get rid of the Saudi regime there will be no peace never.

And who/what will replace it? Iran wants Saudi regime to fall in order to attempt taking over oil in Saudi Arabia. It's about political interests here. And because it's about politics, most Saudi's and average Sunni Muslims won't agree with your agenda. And most Iranians and average Shia's won't agree with the other agenda. The ones in between are the extreme ones like Shia sectarian radicals who will do everything and kill as many Sunni's/Arabs to advance Iranian interests and the Sunni one in between is ISIS which is willing to do attacks inside countries like these and on Western tourists.

Some Arabs are blaming Iran and stating it seeks these attacks to gain inlfuence amongst Arab Shia's. Your first reaction of 'Saudi regime must be ridden of' makes Saudis who sympathize with you suspicious from you and consider it a plan by Iran.

Sad indeed. The ongoing sectarian war in Iraq (which is as bad as medieval religious wars) is now having its echo around the Arabian Gulf.

Here is another statement which feeds into suspicion of Iranian people. And comments like these are reason why the theory of Iran being behind attacks is given credibility. Iranian's are very desperate for power, very desperate for Arab oil. They will do anything at any cost to Shia Arabs to advance their interests. This is why I have a horrible picture of Iran now. This grudge against Arabs/ambition for power is so vile.

The worst part about it is you guys think you're strategy is unknown of when in reality it's a stupid sectarian strategy that you are rushing like no other which is causing sectarian violence.
