Astra missile to be tested soon

It is meant to intercept target at supersonic speeds

A captive flight test will be first carried out in March-April

The missile will be later integrated with the Light Combat Aircraft and Sukhoi-30

HYDERABAD: Astra, the beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, having the capability to engage a high-speed, fast-manoeuvring target, will soon be tested by integrating the weapon system to a fighter aircraft.

A captive flight test would be first carried out in March-April by fitting the missile to the aircraft, Astra project director S. Gollakota told The Hindu here. During the test, the aircraft would conduct several manoeuvres at different speeds and altitudes when the mechanical, electronics and avionics compatibility would be checked. Following this, the flight test would be conducted when the missile fitted to the aircraft would be fired. “We are hoping to do it by October-November 2008,” he added.

He said the “futuristic missile” meant exclusively to intercept the target at supersonic speeds (1.2 to 1.4 Mach) was already tested on the ground to prove its avionics, guidance and other sub-systems, including the propulsion. After the flight trials, the missile would be integrated with the multi-role Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas) and Sukhoi-30 by the year-end. Early next year, it was planned to be integrated with MIG-29 and Mirage 2000.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists are working to ensure that Astra performed effectively at different altitudes — one cruising at an altitude of 15 km with a range of 100 km, another at an altitude of eight km with 44 km range and the third (sea-level altitude) with a range of 21 km.

Stating that it was a highly agile missile though smallest of the DRDO’s weapon systems in terms of size and weight, Dr. Gollakota said it was better than missiles of similar class belonging to Russia, the United States and France. The aerodynamics design combined with accurate guidance, sensors and the Radio Frequency seeker provided the missile with the much-needed capability to intercept fast-moving targets at supersonic speed.

In a typical combat scenario, the coordinates of the target would be passed on to the missile by the radar of the mother aircraft through a secure data link system. This would ensure that “handing over errors” were minimised, accuracy increased and the miss-distance was less than five metres.

In the last 15 km, the seeker becomes active and homes in onto the object.

Owww........I wonder what IAF has in its inventory.......ancient maybe!!

Qaite a planning..... it is as though DRDO is assured of its success:woot:

A big claim. Lets wait and see........ who will be approved for sales. Will Russia get the Astra??? What about US???

Poor me, I thought this was normal procedure to launch Missile?? I never thought this is "indi-genously" Patended procedure!!!

This is an Indian / Israeli joint venture. Indian press pesent such news, as if it is Made in India.
This country has yet to manufacture an Indigenous product.

Moderators, is this thread for intelligent discussion or for conversations that border on stupidity and trolling? Please take some action, Titanium's post was nothing but inflammatory.

Tell me anything intelligent in the report, I will edit it out. By it is not that you written the report...........chill baby.

By the way be prepared ---Missile program is getting cancelled.

This Astra will be developed now with Foriegn "consultancy"-aka- ToT.

While India would be collobrating with Israel for development of surface-to-air upgraded spyder missiles, for Astra, New Delhi has roped in French and Russian collobrators. PTI

NDTV.com: India closes down missile programme

It is all over for India's first missile development programme launched in 1983 under APJ Abdul Kalam.

The programme has been plagued by cost and time over runs, but according to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), India has developed most of its missiles under this programme.

These include the surface-to-surface Agni missiles, the shorter range Prithvis, the surface-to-air Trishul and long-range surface-to-air Akash missiles.

The missile program is getting closed, not cancelled. It has achieved what it meant to achieve.

You are completely wrong here. Foreign consultancy could also mean that help would be taken and designs rectified only where there is a technical hurdle which could not be resolved and needs help of companies experienced in the field.

Astra has been developed, it has already been test fired. Foreign consultancy can be to remove some persisting glitches. As has been the case with Kaveri. The engine is ready, it is not performing upto the expected standards, so foreign help was roped in. THis does not mean that Kaveri will be changed or their engine will be copied and that will be called Kaveri. It means that their designs or ideas would be adapted in the particular area or segment to remove that glitch.

The Missile program was far over budget and running way behind, that was the cause of this project closer.
I have heard that there is a sign in MOD India which reads"Foreign Help Welcome".

The program is scrapped, happy now. For those looking for scemantics in this also...ah!

The program was failure,

Astra --after 25 years still looking for foreign partner.

Nag-Anti-tank Missile is going nowhere---again after 25 years,

Agni--utter failure.

You know I expected you to elaborate on "consultancy", that is why I chose the word.
Ahh the consultancy of Dassault for LCA.

the consultancy of kruss for Arjun MBT.

Have you heard that? Definetly an your astounding perceptible capability, now you must be definetly proud of yourself.

Oh I should admire your reckoning, cost overrun and delays are the cause of Project closer, indeed your sheer uniqueness.

The Telegraph - Calcutta (Kolkata) | Frontpage | Blast-off from a missile era

India has wound up its guided missile programme 24 years after it was launched, jettisoning the political philosophy of isolated self-reliance in military technology.

The burial of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) founded by A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in July 1983 was couched in claims by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that it has delivered all five missile systems that the plan envisaged.

The announcement comes a day before the DRDO celebrates its golden jubilee. Begun with an initial allocation of about Rs 389 crore in 1983, the cost and time overruns have seen more than Rs 2,000 crore being used up in the programme to develop five missile system

Splendid

Still way remarkable, started with shoe-string budget and top of that from scratch, still managed to resist the blow of only $0.5 billion deficit and come out as a winner and made India to walk with high shoulder. DRDO I am proud of you
