The Chinese Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Syrian president special envoy Bouthaina Shaaban is to visit China on Tuesday.

During the visit, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi will hold talks with Shaaban, who is Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's political and media advisor, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a written reply to a reporter's question.

"Meanwhile, China is also considering inviting members of the Syrian opposition groups to visit," Qin added.

Qin said China has always actively promoted its work between the Syrian government and the opposition in a balanced way to achieve a political solution to the Syria issue.

The spokesman noted China has been urging the two sides to substantially implement the six-point peace plan proposed by the UN-AL joint envoy Kofi Annan, the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the Geneva communique agreed by the Action Group meeting of major world powers on June 30.

China urges both sides to cease fire immediately, protect civilians and resolve the crisis through political dialogue, the spokesman said.

"The Arrangement of Shaaban's visit is part of the work mentioned above", Qin said.

China hosts President Assad’s special envoy, deflecting criticism of its Syria policy:yahoo:

BEIJING — China sought to defuse criticism of its policy on Syria’s violence, saying while hosting a government envoy Tuesday that opposition figures may also visit Beijing soon.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s political and media adviser, Buthaina Shaaban, was due to meet Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi for talks, the Foreign Ministry said.

That reflects long-standing close ties between China and Syria that have prompted China to join with Russia in the U.N. Security Council to block action that could force Assad from power.

However, China also is considering inviting members of Syrian opposition groups to visit. Opposition representatives have visited before, but the worsening civil war would lend another visit added importance.

“China has always actively promoted its work between the Syrian government and the opposition in a balanced way to achieve a political solution to the Syria issue,” spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.

Yang is expected to reiterate calls for both sides in Syria to implement special envoy Kofi Annan’s six-point peace plan to end the fighting that has killed an estimated 20,000 people over the last 18 months. Annan is resigning at the end of the month due to his failure to even achieve a temporary cease-fire in the civil war.

China and Russia have been sharply criticized by the United States and other Western countries for vetoing Security Council resolutions that might have opened the door to sanctions on Syria and ultimately force Assad from power.

China has a firm policy against supporting international humanitarian interventions and felt burned after abstaining on a vote supporting no-fly zones in Libya. China accused NATO of overstepping the resolution’s mandate and vowed to block any similar measures in future.

China has strongly rejected criticism that it was hampering efforts to end the Syrian conflict.

Annan and U.S. officials have come to Beijing recently to seek China’s backing on the U.N.’s resolutions, or to at least abstain as it did in the Libyan case, but there have been no signs that China will change its stance.

profit is sometimes over ideologie.

Profit should always be over ideologies (idiot-ologies).

I like this approach of Chinese.

I wish Pakistanis do the same. right now we are stuck with Islamist ideology stuck in our behinds, and we are unable to maneuver our country towards progress.

Bottom line is that Chinese sided with Qaddafi and got burned. That was a HUGE miscalculation on Chinese part.

This time with Syria, they are a bit more cautious but still on the wrong side.

Chinese and Pakistanis both should support the future of Syria, and not the dying and almost dead past.

You may be mistaken on a couple of points. China never sided with Khaddafi. Neither does it side with Basser. As an adherent to the principle of non-interference China opposes any foreign attemps at regime change in any sovereign country. That's the crux of the matter.

Hitler could have claimed the same thing while gassing and annihilating Jewish citizens. There is a time when you have to stop a dictator killing his people by the 1000s.

At that time, the dictator does not deserve to be called "sovereign".

Chinese support for Bashar the butcher has allowed him to massacre 1000s more human beings. China is also siding with Russia while Russia supplies lethal weapons to Bashar the butcher.

This my friend is siding with the wrong side.

That's all

You obviously feel stongly about it and you are entitled to your opinion. What I am saying is that China's veto should not be looked upon as an endorsement of the current regime in Syria. China has very little vested interest in Syria. It is solely a principled opposition to threatende military intervention in the internal affairs of Syria. We can agree to disagree.
