The Sri Lankan government is set to order 2,200 buses for the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) at a cost of LKR 5 billion (USD 38.2 million) from Lanka Ashok Leyland PLC., a Joint Venture between Ashok Leyland of India and the Sri Lankan government.

The media here quoted Lankan Transport Minister, Kumara Welgama, as saying that the government was negotiating with Lanka Ashok Leyland PLC for supplier’s credit. On its part ,the government will give the SLTB, LKR 1 million a year for five years. The SLTB will have to bear the rest of the cost.

This order is part of the government’s bid to shore up the state transport sector which is languishing for want of new stock and proper maintenance. The common man is forced to use private transport which is vastly more expensive.

Lanka Ashok Leyland was established in 1982, and has stood by Sri Lanka through its many decades of turmoil and has been formally recognized for that. Its buses and trucks account for about the 60 percent of the vehicles in this segment, a far cry from what it was 29 years ago, when it was 13 percent.
