ASEAN, China talk on East Sea
Updated : 10:59 AM, 26/06/2012

(VOV) - Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh and his Chinese counterpart, Cheng Gouping on June 25 concluded a two day meeting in Hanoi of senior officials from ASEAN and China on the implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct (DOC) of Parties in the East Sea.

Both sides vowed to implement the DOC and create a Code of Conduct in the East Sea. They spoke of the need to maintain peace, stability, maritime security and safety, confidence building co-operation, and the peaceful settlement of disputes on the basis of international laws, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Participants also re-assessed the implementation of DOC, especially in restarting the ASEAN-China senior officials’ meeting and reaffirmed that the declaration was an important document for building trust in the region.

ASEAN emphasized the need to soon start working with China on creating the Code of Conduct.

If I'm not mistaken, 2009 is the deadline for countries to submit their registration EEZ to UN. After some ASEAN countries sent the map as prescribed by UNCLOS1982 EEZ, China has opposed based on so-called "nine dotted line" which was painted in 1948. And the mess started increasing ...

We call on negotiation and explore together for decades, but nobody answer
today we plan to explore in SCS, It's a little late but I'm happy to see some ASEAN countries want to sit and negotiate now

US sees momentum on South China Sea code
Published: 28/06/2012 at 10:48 AM

The United States said it saw momentum in talks between China and Southeast Asia on agreeing to a code of conduct to ease deep friction over competing claims in the South China Sea.

The South China Sea is likely to be high on the agenda when US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton heads next month to Cambodia for talks of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and regional powers including China.

Kurt Campbell, the US assistant secretary of state for East Asia, said he understood that a draft proposal on a code of conduct was being discussed and that the United States expected to hear more details while in Cambodia.

"What we have seen of late has been an increase in diplomacy between Asean and China about aspects associated with a potential code of conduct," Campbell told a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

"I will say that we are frankly impressed with the level of focus that particularly Asean has given to this," Campbell said.

Campbell did not give more details on the potential code of conduct and acknowledged that disputes over the South China Sea are "fraught with difficulty."

"They spur nationalist sentiment across the region as a whole and it is extraordinarily important to deal with them with great delicacy," he said.

Asean and China agreed in 2002 to negotiate a code of conduct. But there has been little visible progress, with a rising China preferring to negotiate with each country individually instead of dealing with a unified bloc.

Asean foreign ministers, meeting in April in Phnom Penh, said they hoped to narrow differences and sign a code of conduct with China by the end of the year.

what the US's business here, Mr. Battle? Relive Vietnam War?

US is their currently daddy (even though slaughtered them like pigs before), so they have to dragg the big daddy into it

Read the article before post.
Note that we are not competent enough to invite or not invite Uncle Sam to participate.

If China respects the sovereignty of the ASEAN countries, we can give her the license or allows her joint venture with us for oil exploration, like we are doing with some other countries.

China can issue a license for those countries which like to explore South China sea,but I highly doubt your poverty striken Vietnam can afford it.it won't be cheap.

It is better to negotiate and come to compromise. All sides should try to sacrifice some interest. In a war both sides loose.
Thanks, we wanna resolve the issue in international court of justice but china rudely said :"No !" many times. we're tired with china's aggression already, we have no choice but fight against them.

Time to teach that bad boy one more hard lesson.

Why doesn't China invite to tender for oil exploration in China's EEZ instead of bidding in the Vietnam's EEZ?
Why so strange?

because they think you are drilling in their EEZ, this is exactly what you are thinking.

EEZ is not sovereignty by the way, and Vietnam penetrates more into Philippines's EEZ, even close to Phillippines's Palawan coast, that's unacceptable.
