If peace in Afghanistan is beneficial to anyone after Afghans themselves it will be Pakistan. A peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan will not only reduce our security concerns but will also open the gates of central Asia to us.

After 9/11 our establishment did make the wrong assessment that US is angry for the time being and will return home soon after taking its revenge. The assessment was that US will pull out in couple of years and whatever setup they leave behind, Talibans will topple that and come to power again. So if you observe Talibans did not show much resistance at the time of the invasion or in the first couple of years of the American stay in Afghanistan. If anybody denies we did not help or at least turned a blind eye towards the selected group of Talibans in the last decade, he'll either be lying or is misinformed.

Having said that Pakistan has realized that this strategy is not going to work and has worked hard in the last couple of years to achieve peace in Afghanistan by co-operating with the current Afghan government. But it seems the hawks in Kabul and their Indian backers are not interested in co-operation. TTP has been nearly wiped out of our territory but with their sanctuaries in Afghanistan they will continue to harm us, our people will die and our economy will suffer.

So only sane thing to do right now is completely seal off the border. As the Afghanistan either does not have the capacity to fully man the border or they are not willing to do so, Pakistan will have to do the complete task by themselves. Fence and mine the border, and constant surveillance through check posts and drones is what is required.

The biggest hurdle against such an act would have been the resistance shown by the tribesmen living close to the border, as they have extended families living across the border as well. If Pakistan would have tried this in say 90's or early 2000 their would been a lot of protest and resistance to it from our tribesmen, but hey if Pakistan had tried to turn FATA into a province in those days the protest would been even greater. But now most of the tribesmen themselves want their agencies to be converted into a province. So it is achievable and will be beneficial to both Pak and Afg, if nothing gets in and out of the country.
