As Saudi-Egypt bridge looks likely to get the green light, environmentalists see red

Environmentalists have urged caution after a US$3 billion bridge project linking Saudi Arabia to Egypt seems likely to have been given the green light by President Mohamed Morsy.

According to an Al-Hayat report quoting Egypt's Transportation Minister Mohamed Rashad, the 32-kilometer causeway will link Sharm el-Sheikh to Ras Hamid, near Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, while passing over the Straights of Tiran.

A technical committee will meet in late September to begin initial planning for the project, which is forecasted to increase trade between the countries by billions of dollars.

But for Noor Noor, executive coordinator for the environmental NGO Nature Conservation Egypt, the government needs to assess more than just the economic benefit of the bridge.

“There is a persistence to go along with this project without fulfilling the proper environmental prerequisites and it's concerning,” said Noor.

“They seem willing to put political goals before the Red Sea itself, and that's quite a dangerous statement,” Noor added.

The bridge could draw over a million travelers through Sinai, especially as an alternative route for Hajj. But environmentalists say more research needs to be done in regards to the likely ecological and social impact of the bridge.

While the exact route has not been announced, it's likely the bridge will pass through three protected islands, including Tiran Island, which often hosts populations of threatened dugong amongst its coral reefs and acts as a breeding ground for birds and sea turtles.

The increased traffic is also likely to threaten the surrounding natural beauty of Sharm-el Sheikh and cause a spike in levels of pollution and waste.

According to Noor, it is important that the surrounding communities are also involved in the decision-making process. “A wide-scale discussion and research must happen with the Ministry of Interior and specialized NGOs, and other communities in Egypt, to ensure the proper information is reaching officials before any decision is taken,” said Noor, adding that Nature Conservation Egypt will begin mobilizing public opinion against the bridge through outreach and awareness campaigns.

“This is a multibillion dollar project and all damages that come as a result of it will be permanent,” Noor said. “There has to be total transparency.”

I heard that Jordan and Israeli objected it, especially Jordan, since it curbs Jordanian sea transit, noting that this is the only sea outlet to Jordan. You Saudis are at it again...

It would mean that another step towards an "arabian Union" has been taken.

How dare you come between two brothers ! Where do you think the mule was imported from if not Egypt ? How else could a mule be such a good belly dancer along with being our love interest ?

On a serious note : This is a good step ! Would cut transit time and costs between Egypt and KSA exponentially. Greater economic integration of the Arab world along with some genuine democracy (don't you just hate me Mosa and Black :P) would do a world of good to the region and the Muslim World at large.

By the way to whom do the Islands belong to ? Egypt or KSA ?

They belong to KSA.

It will not just be a bridge by the way. A railroad track will be built alongside of it. Which will be connected to the railroad going through Turkey amd into Europe.

Really ? Are you saying that someone in Africa will be able to travel to Europe by a train ?

Been busy with work ! These days my timings are 9 in the morning till 10 in the evening which means by the time I'm back home I'm beyond dead-tired ! My supervisor even made me work today and tomorrow (on Sunday !) by giving me 4 files (each thicker then a suit-case !) and a lot of megabytes in soft-copies on the disk....! I'm beginning to hate this internship so much !

Onto the strategic issues ! Take it as an impetus, albeit a forced one, to further develop the Jordanian Banking Sector (something that even I, sitting about a few thousand kms away, have heard much praise about !) to make it even more enticing a prospect for foreign investors to invest in. I remember we were given a case-study on an unnamed Jordanian Bank (I think it was your National/State Bank) that was able to weather the financial crisis so well when most banks all over the world were falling apart and how some of those policies and procedures were being thought to be adopted by the State Bank of Pakistan. On the other-side I hear Jordan is making some big leaps in 'Higher Education', invest more into it and you just might become the educational hub of the Middle East ! I'm sure there a plethora of possibilities that can be exploited to realize your potential...do that ! See this, apparent, impediment as 'impetus', as a way to forcefully shake you out of 'procrastination' that all of us are usually crippled by !

Who knows Jordan would be exporting more of its stuff through this bridge then the Saudis !

I think it will be a long run plan. It's just a plan which I think would take 20-30 years.

The island officially belong to Saudi Arabia but are being used by Egypt. Because of strict military regulations, it's not possible to enter the island.

Yep. That is the plan mate :D
That would be amazing! I am sure this train will pass thru other countries before it hits Europe as well. Do you have any PDF file about the whole project ?

The railroad is supposed to be connected with the Tabuk station. And the Tabuk station is part of the North-South railroad which is suppose to run through Amman and into Damascus and Aleppo amd then into Ankara and then into the Istanbul station which is part of the Eurorail network.

Amazing! A railroad is planned is to connect Sinai with the rest of Egypt and the Delta. Also, in the future a railroad is suppose to be built to connect Egypt with the rest of African countries that would go through Sudan.

I don't know wither we should be happy that a 19th century railroad bonanza that happened in the west is happening now or to be sad it is just happening now.

However this is really a good development.

Well, at least we are moving forward with something!
