LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said on Wednesday that he went slow on Bofors files when he was the defence minister during the United Front government.
Speaking at a function at Ram Manohar Lohia Law University, the SP chief said he had gone to border areas in Jammu & Kashmir and found Bofors guns were working perfectly. "Then I decided to go slow on Bofors files and ensured that no politician got entangled in litigation."
"When it comes to Bofors, people talk ill of Rajiv Gandhi. But when I, as defence minister, saw Bofors working, I felt that he had done something good. Bofors guns were superb. So I decided that no politicians would be penalised for Bofors," he said

मुलायम बुधवार को यहां डॉ. राम मनोहर लोहिया नेशनल लॉ यूनिवर्सिटी के 10वें स्थापना दिवस पर सम्मान समारोह में बोल रहे थे। उन्होंने कहा कि रक्षा मंत्री रहते उन्होंने जम्मू-कश्मीर के दुर्गम क्षेत्रों में सेना के हालात देखे हैं, वहां रात गुजारी है। बोफोर्स तोप को लेकर राजीव गांधी पर बहुत आरोप लगे। हमने इस तोप को चलते देखा है, इसने सीमावर्ती क्षेत्रों में अच्छा काम किया है।
हमने रक्षा मंत्री रहते बोफोर्स तोप के मामले को आगे नहीं बढ़ाया, इसकी फाइल ही गायब करा दी। उन्होंने कहा, राजनीति करना आसान काम नहीं है। आप किसी एमएलए को रात के दो बजे भी उठा सकते हैं लेकिन क्या आईएएस और आईपीएस अधिकारी को रात में दो बजे जगा सकते हैं।
