‘6-Day-Long Keran Encounter Ends Inconclusively’

September 30, 2013

SRINAGAR: The bodies of 15 militants which were lying on Line of Control (LoC) in North Kashmir’s Keran Sector since last week, have been reportedly taken back by intruders from Pakistani side raising serious concern from intelligence agencies regarding the failure from Indian Army’s side in retrieving the militants’ bodies. The militants were killed in an operation after Army claimed to have foiled a major infiltration bid on September 24. The operation, which according to sources, ended on Sunday last evening left 4 soldiers injured.

Official sources told GNS that since a week long operation, no militant body was retrieved due to timely firing from other side. In the meantime, sources maintained that all the militants were killed in the operation and their bodies were taken back by a heavily armed group of militants who reportedly also occupied 3 Indian Observation pickets by crossing about 3 kilometers into this side.

Security agencies have raised queries regarding the recovery of militant bodies in Keran operation and killing of a 60-year-old man in Macchill operation in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, official sources said.

They held concerns over the failure of Indian Army to recover the bodies of militants. “The questions over Indian Army not being able to retrieve at least a single militant body and the killing of 60-year-old person in Macchill Sector on Sep 23 were raised by security agencies,” sources told GNS.

Sources said that after an hour-long fresh firing near Shalbhatu in Keran Sector, the militants managed to escape before injuring four troopers of 3/3-GR, putting an end to 6-day-long fierce encounter.

The injured soldiers were identified as havaldar T.B. Roka, rifleman Youg Bahadur, rifleman Tejinder KC and rifleman Tula Ram. All the injured were immediately airlifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital here in Srinagar.

Pertinently, on September 28, confirmed sources revealed that three observation pickets situated at high altitude area of Shalbhutu near LoC in Keran sector have been occupied by militants. The pickets, according to sources were being used by 20-Kamaw unit of army which was recently replaced by 3/3-GR Unit.

However, senior Army official had declined to comment on the militants’ occupying of three observation pickets in Keran Sector.

If the Shalbato area of Keran Sector was cordoned from all sides and the encounter took place about 3 kms away from the LoC, how could 15 men take back 15 bodies across to the other side ??

Only ones reporting this( the occupying of 3 pickets) is the highly unreliable Kashmiri Media quoting 3rd grade News agency from Kashmir GNS.

Here is the real news:

Search for militants continues in Kupwara
Army says bodies of 15 ultras lying in the area

Srinagar, September 30
A major operation near the Line of Control in north Kashmir, where more than a dozen militants are suspected to be hiding in dense forests and mountainous locales, has entered a seventh day. Fifteen militant are believed to have been killed in the operation so far.

The operation in the Keran sector of Kupwara district has become one of the longest encounters in recent years between the Army and militants, with no immediate end in sight.

A group of 30 to 35 militants infiltrated from across the Line of Control (LoC) on September 24 into the Keran sector, about 130 km from here. It was intercepted by the Army, resulting in days of confrontation and intermittent exchange of heavy gunfire.

So far, the Army has claimed to have killed 15 militants whose bodies, it said, were lying in the area.

An Army officer said a “status quo” was in place in the operation as soldiers were following a “wait and watch” approach. “We don’t want to expose our troops in open, but it is confirmed they (militants) are still there,” the officer said.

The operation involves troops of 5 Assam, 57 Rashtriya Rifles, 3/3 Gorkha Rifles and Army’s elite para commandos.

The officer said fresh gunfight broke out between troops and militants last night which continued for more than half an hour.

The militants have spread out in a vast swathe of mountainous area, which is under cordon by hundreds of soldiers, and have engaged troops in at least four locations.

“The contact has been made almost everyday at the four locations,” he said.

The militants are believed to have come from several outfits, including Jaish-e-Mohammad, Lashkar-e-Toiba, Al Badr and Hizbul Mujahideen.

Militancy has declined to record levels in Kashmir in recent years but has shown signs of resurgence.

There has been a sudden spate in attacks in the Kashmir region this year, including the return of fidayeens, who carried out two major strikes in Srinagar city in mid-March and in the Jammu region last week, targeting security forces.

Security operations in Kashmir continue depending upon the intensity of the infiltration

I wish that batter understanding will prevail and infiltration is stoped. I do not believe that this militants are really that bad guys but these poor guys are misused by some vested interest who earns a lot from the business of terrorism. I have seen the confession video of Kasab. From his confession, one can easily judge how this poor boys are made militants by offering them few rupees and new cloths etc. I have full sympathy for them.

This report has not been independently confirmed/verified.

Secondly, it is impossible for any militants to firstly 'occupy' a post and secondly, 3 km inside Indian territory! That's a load of bull considering that every inch in that area is covered by electric/barbed wire fencing 300-400 m from the LoC. Therefore the report that militants are occupying an area 3 km inside Indian territory is utter nonsense!

As to why the 15 dead bodies of the terrorists, earlier sent from across the LoC could not be recovered was due to the nature of the terrain in the area as well as the covering fire being provided by the PA from dominating higher ground where their posts are located. Therefore, retrieving bodies from such an area was not worth it.

The yahoos retrieved the bodies to the nearest Pak pickets where they must have been buried with full state honors!! :P It is good in a way as that must have lowered the morale of the 'invincible Allah's fighters' on seeing the dead bodies of their buddies!!
