Jammu: On the last day of his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, along with Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag, on Saturday arrived here to review the overall security situation in the region and visit some forward areas on the Line of Control (LoC).
A special plane carrying the Defence Minister landed at Jammu airport this morning.
Accompanied by the Indian Army Chief and GOC of the northern command Lieutenant General DS Hooda, Parrikar went to the Nagrota headquarters of 16th Corps.
Defence sources told a news agency in Jammu that Parrikar reviewed the overall situation on the LoC and the anti-militancy operations by the Army in Jammu region and Lieutenant General KH Singh GOC of 16th corps briefed the minister at the corps headquarters at Nagrota.
"The Defence Minister is visiting some forward positions on the LoC in Bhimber Gali sector of Poonch district today (Saturday)," a defence source said.
Before concluding his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, Parrikar will pay obeisance at the Mata Vaishnoo Devi Shrine in the evening.
The Defence Minister on Friday visited the Siachen Glacier in the Ladakh region where he addressed soldiers and officers guarding the country's frontiers at the world's highest and toughest battlefield.
Parrikar also discussed the overall security situation in the state with Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra and Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed in Srinagar on Friday.
The Defence Minister also visited the Badami Bagh headquarters of the Army's 15th Corps in Srinagar where he reviewed the security situation in the Kashmir valley with field commanders led by lieutenant General Subrata Saha, GOC of 15 Corps.
This is his second visit to Jammu and Kashmir after he took over as the defence minister in November.

Mufti Mohammad Sayeed here and discussed security situation of the state.
Both the leaders discussed the situation along the Line of Control and in the hinterland of the state during the nearly hour-long meeting, official sources said.
The sources said the
issue of revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) did not figure in the discussions.
They said the Chief Minister raised the
issue of prompt release of funds to Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for maintenance of the Highways within the state.
Sayeed also sought speedy disposal of other issues between the state and the Ministry of Defence including shifting of Army firing ranges in Leh and Jammu as the state government wants to use this land for setting up amenities for civilians, the sources said.
The Chief Minister also sought the Defence Minister's intervention for extension of the Kargil airport runway.
Parrikar, who is on a two-day security review visit to the state, will fly to Jammu tomorrow morning and visit the forward posts in Poonch sector.
He will be briefed by senior army officials about the security situation in Jammu region.
