Actually India doesn't have anything that could be closer to A30D Volvo. These are huge ones. You should see the truck in desert. We use it at our site in desert if nothing else works.

Exactly and that's the reason why the Volvos are bad choices for an howitzer. It's heavy, big and has limitations in ammo carrying and fire angle. We might have nothing similar, but you also don't need such a big platform to carry such an howitzer and don't forget that it is a special truck, that is only used for limited areas, which means low numbers sold, expensive spare parts, high unit costs!

+ let's also consider that the Nexter Caeser is almost HALF the weight of the ARCHER but packs and equally deadly punch and performance wise there is little to distingush the ARCHER from the CASER, except, and this is key, the Caesar can be transported by the ever gorwing IAF fleet of C-130Js and the ARCHER would require the services of the IAF's beastly C-17. This has got to play on the IA's collective mind, you are not always going to have a C-17 available so having the option of being able to use one of the 12+ C-130Js is a big plus especially in emergency periods. Not to mention having a 33 ton machine like the ARCHER in some foreward areas along the LAC is not exactly a recipe for success.

With respect the highly augmented ARCHER only requires 1 less crew members and, in fact, the Caesar can be operated by a crew of 3 if nessercary during an emergency and the ARCHER carries about the same number of rounds.

Yeah the TATA/Denel offer should definitely be looked into.

I too thought Denal was a no-go as it was blacklisted.

During an emergency, normal crew is 6, while an automatic system often only needs 2 and as I stated earlier, the low carrying capability of Archer is one of it's main disadvantage, but compare it and the CESAR to the heavier system:

Yes, but so was Rheinmetall and still both formed JV with TATA and Mahindra to join Indian arms competitions. So either MoD is ok with them again, or it's a different issue if they offer products in a JV.

Numbers might be enough for normal towed howitzers, but wrt selfpropelled howitzerse, more than the gun itself must be considered. Ammo that it carries, time to be ready for operation, crew size and air transportability are important requirements.
