Ministry of Defence - managed thinktank for production of security-related innovative military arsenal, new technical products and all other accessories, the Centre for Research and Development (CRD) at Pitipana, Homagama, this morning (20) extended a warm welcome to Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army when he called at the location to have firsthand experience.

Brigadier Tiran De Silva (Retd), Director General, CRD, together with senior tri-service Officers working there invited the visiting Commander of the Army afterwards to take a close look at its electronic wing, technical section and the nuclear, biological & chemical wing that produces a wide assortment of multiple military requirements.

During his stay inside the Centre, he closely watched the CRD-made missile and MBRLs, simulation platforms generally used for training purposes, ballistic rubber samples, simulators for jungle lane firing needs, rocket launchers, mortars, parachutes, armoured tanks and multiple accessories widely necessary for tri-services.

Impressed very much with varieties of those productions, the Commander requested the CRD to begin mass production of those new products for use in the Army as early as possible, enabling the Army to save a large chunk of foreign exchange for the country. He also requested the CRD to supply those innovative products to the Army since island-wide deployments are in need of them heavily for different training purposes.

He also inquired into different other innovative moves, being implemented in the institute and shared a couple of views with researching Officers on possibilities and opportunities for products that could be exported in future, bringing reputation to the country.

Before the Commander left the place, he left some compliments in the Visitors’ Book. Memories were also added to the occasion by Brigadier Tiran De Silva (Retd), Director General, CRD presenting a replica of an MBRL to the Commander of the Army as a souvenir.

The CRD-produced Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) in the recent Independence Day military parade took the limelight since it was the first-ever locally-produced MBRL to match with international standards. Similarly, in early January this year, the CRD-manufactured ballistic rubber sample, needed for firing purposes was introduced to the Commander of the Army.
