Army chief’s selection PM’s prerogative: Mamnoon

President-elect Mamnoon Hussain says the appointment of the army chief is the sole prerogative of the prime minister and the most senior army officer will step into the shoes of the current Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.

In an interview with Geo TV on Saturday, Mamnoon said the most senior general would be made the army chief and most senior judge would become the chief justice of Pakistan.

Talking about the Pakistan-India relations, he said these should improve to the collective betterment of the people of the two countries and he would assist the PML-N government in this regard.

Mamnoon said he would try to maintain harmony among the provinces and desired a better mechanism of cooperation among the intelligence agencies.

He said the establishment of a joint department of national security was expected within a few days.

Responding to a question, the president-elect said: “Let the court decide the case of former President Pervez Musharraf and the government should not interfere in this matter.”

Mamnoon said force should be used against people having weapons because a weapon-free Pakistan was the need of the hour.

He said a planned action would be taken with the assistance of all institutions concerned to tackle the law and order situation in Karachi.

He further said chairman NAB would be appointed in consultation with the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah, adding that an impartial NAB was needed to eliminate corruption root and branch.

Responding to a question, Mamnoon said Pakistan was facing terrorism and economic difficulties and it needed a solemn commitment to tackle all these issues.

Responding to a question about the normalization of relations between the PML-N and MQM, Mamnoon said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif desired better relations with all political forces to avoid any uncertain situation.

He said there was no law for the protection of witnesses and legislation was the need of the hour. He said drone attacks were against the sovereignty of the country and these must stop.
