New Delhi, Feb 28: After Army Chief General VK Singh's debacle in the court over age row, the Union Defence Ministry has now denied permission for his Israel visit. He was scheduled to visit the country from March 16 to 18.

The reason behind the denial by the ministry was referred as "critical situation prevailing in the Middle-East."

After the court took the government's side, the Army chief had withdrawn the petition for changing the date of birth to 1951 from 1950.

Meanwhile, Gen Singh is due to step down on May 31, 2012.

I think this was nothing to do with the age issue but as the government said - was coz of the precarious situation in middle east.

An Indian Army Chief visiting Israel during an ongoing Iran-Israel confrontation which might turn to a military confrontation will be a bad signal to our Iran.

We cannot choose a side...no matter what we feel about Israelis or Iranians..

We have to stay neutral..and a high profile visit from the most important official in our defense department does not keeps us so...hopefully this issue in middle east will blow over in few months and then our Army chief can visit Israel or even Iran without raising eye brows in either of them..

as few days left for his retirement..he has become just an old hog for our defense ministry whom they wanna get rid off asap!!!:hitwall:

Such a shame, I understand it but I don't like it- Israel has been a great defence partner to India in the past and this sort of fence sitting pleases no one but isolates everyone. GoI are going to,at some point, pick a side and stick with it.

Woow !! some one should plz explain this crazy logic to me...

India is going to send a trade delegation to IRAN. That is not going to disturb the 'precarious' situation but when CoAS have a scheduled visit to Israel, he is rejected keeping in mind the 'precarious' situation. splendid !!

Look, I don't mind India playing a balancing act between Iran and Israel but we should not go about it in some half-assed manner like what this present govt. is doing.

Rather than deliberately trying to act as neutral, India should act normally. We should send both the trade delegation as well as Military visit like any other day in office...

This act of deliberately trying to act as neutral ( smartass ) ends up distancing both parties since everyone likes to know who all they can count on in times on need. Obviously some country with half-assed policy will piss them off both.

And it was not as if the general would have taught them some out of the world strategy to beat the Iranians.

India can't play 2 cards at once. Both letter I's may sound the same but in fact they are not.
Either they are with Iran or with Israel.
Maybe India is facing the pressure and that must be the reason why the ACG was denied permission.

its a balancing act which we have perfected. , look at all our past diplomatic strategies. we have yet to alienate any one side towards us . thats why its called diplomacy .

And how are you so sure that the balancing act will be disturbed if our CoAS visits Israel ? It's not an urgent visit. It was scheduled couple of months ago which should have been allowed to continue.

So say we.

Infact the perfect way to remain neutral is act with the Israel as if Iran did not exist and act with Iran as if Israel did not exist.

But we act with Iran as if Israel did not exist, but with Israel again we give importance to Iran. How can there be trust between two partners when we refuse to meet them halfway down the road..? Is this not a diplomatic snub of sorts to Israel..? If I was Israel I would be seriously pissed with India.

We love Iranians and Iran is not going anywhere, but the present regime of Mullahas and their obnoxious policy is just too irritating.
They always talk of destruction, so if destruction is what they want then let it be. Why not we destroy them, so that the people of our two countries then can live the ways we dream to be, IE open market trade, oil, goods, transit lines to central Asia etc etc.

That is not how it happens we have diplomatic ties with both nation, hostilities starts only when diplomacy fails. India's tise with Iran have nothing to do with Israel and vice versa, its business, its diplomacy. no body sours a relation for the interest of other nation, and all three nations knows it, and neither we are a part of any military bloc to make things complicated.
