MANILA, Philippines – Philippine President Benigno Aquino III on Tuesday, September 22, joked about China's disputed maritime territorial claims and praised Beijing's regional rival Japan for passing new legislation allowing the nation's troops to fight abroad.

Speaking in an interview with ABS-CBN television, Aquino said that China had proposed the joint development of the South China Sea while at the same time claiming almost all of the strategically sensitive waters.

"The joke then was that China was saying 'what is ours is ours, what is yours, we share,'" Aquino said.

He also rejected China's calls for a bilateral dialogue, saying that any talks should involve other countries that claim parts of the area such as Brunei, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan.

Aquino praised Japan's passage of controversial legislation that eases restrictions on its military, opening up the possibility that it could fight abroad for the first time since World War II.

He said this would make Japan "a more able partner in various activities like peace-keeping."

"Should they be accorded lesser rights because at one point of time, they were very aggressive?" he added.

The security bills, which the Japanese parliament passed into law on Saturday, drew condemnation from China, which said they were a threat to regional peace, but the Philippines welcomed the move.

Aquino firmed up the strategic partnership between the two countries when he visited Japan in June and the Philippines hosted two naval exercises in quick succession with Japan earlier this year.

The Philippines has been the most vocal opponent of China's claims in the South China Sea, criticising its efforts to turn isolated outcrops in the disputed waters into artificial islands that can host military facilities.

Manila has also filed a case with an international tribunal challenging Beijing's maritime claims.

. .
question is, how can PH fight China? if i'm not mistaken the murica were reluctant to send their men to defend PH. are they going to hide behind someone's back? PH is drawing other's condemnations and attentions when it's truly unneeded.

The wisdom of Aquino is admirable. :)

At least they (the former comfort women) have the right to protest about their sentiments, unlike in some country...

And again with threats of war will come? I guess this, being a military-dedicated forum will have member wishing for war.

Probably they just want to hear from Japan that they recognize that the Japan of WW2 did something wrong, though this protest expresses that due to their experience, they still have mistrust about Japan. It is their opinion.

And seeing one of the pictures having the name of a feminist group (the picture that has a picket with the "Gabriela" on it), I could say that there are some groups that are using the former comfort women to push the group's own agenda.

Sa akin lang 'to ha , they should have been compensated a long time ago and perhaps some bureaucratic red tape prevented this to be done on an expedient manner. Tho I can say with a level of confidence , from my exposure to the Japanese-Filipino community in Cebu, Davao and in Metro Manila --- that there have been private group levels where Japanese funds were delivered to veterans of the Filipino guerillas and there have been civic engagements on a private basis to fund schools for communities that were sites for historical battles. I suppose it would commensurate some past foibles if more of such private actions were replicated on larger schema. That's just my view.

Maraming na maraming salamat sa input sayo, salamat sa dialogue natin.

Regards,

Aquino is a heavily corrupted idiot. He betray all his countrymen by selling out his country for uselss patrol boat and verbal promise from US. Allowing his countryment to be raped and live in poverty. He shall be hanged for degrading his country and not knowing what the real priority for his real countrymen.

Gabriela is well known to picket outside the US embassy, and they are very active today due to the "Pemberton case" and even the 2005 Subic rape case, where it is known that the so-called "victim" just wants a green card. The Gabriela group is a member of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan Bagong Alyansang Makabayan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which is a leftist group similar to CPP-NPA-NDF but do their business by picketing and protesting instead.
