LEH, MAY 4 : A day ahead of his maiden trip to the worldâs highest battlefield in Siachen, Defence Minister A K Antony today promised troops a âgood dealâ in the Sixth Pay Commission. The Minister, on his first visit to Leh, said he had personally taken up the case for a 400 to 450 per cent salary hike with the Pay Commission.
âWe have been able to achieve speedy economic growth in the past few years and this is due to the tremendous confidence that opinion makers have about the armed forces. The country must now reciprocate,â the Minister said, addressing troops from the Leh-based 14 Corps on Friday morning.
Antony said a joint memorandum from all the three services was put up for the first time before the commission. âFor the first time in the history of the armed forces, a joint memorandum was sent with inputs from the army, navy and air force. They sat together and did a lot of homework to draw out a presentation,â the Minister said. âBy and large the border areas are quiet. Firing is under control and cross-border terror has also been controlled. It is the countryâs duty to compensate troops for the sacrifices they are making,â Antony reasoned.
A recent Parliamentary Committee report had blasted the Government for giving a raw deal to the armed forces in the Fifth Pay Commission. The report said the forces were not accorded their deserved dues and a separate Pay Commission was necessary for drawing up salary hikes for armed forces. The Commission lambasted the government for being unfair to armed forces personnel, given the fact that they did not have any union or forum to push for their rights. Another report had cited the unfair pay policy as the main reason for attrition among officers.
