Punjab Assembly passes resolution condemning media


AHORE: The Punjab Assembly on Friday passed a resolution condemning the role of media and alleged it of ‘irresponsible behaviour’ amid the on-going fake degree controversy.

The resolution, forwarded by PML-Q MPA Sanaullah Mastikhel, was passed with full consensus of the house. It was met with a strong opposition by various journalists’ unions across the country, who vowed to boycott the proceedings of the National Assembly and all four provincial assemblies.

The resolution recommends that a joint committee, comprising members of the assembly and media representatives, be formed to resolve the differences between the two parties.

Local media has been held responsible for promoting anti-government propaganda that could destabilise Pakistan’s democratic future.

The resolution also condemned the dramatic coverage of assembly proceedings, where clips of female members of the house based on movie songs are played on several private news channels.

Members of the assembly have been criticizing the role of local media regarding the fake-degree saga. Several members of the Punjab assembly had been vocal in their opposition, which led to the unanimous vote on the resolution.

Reporters and other media persons covering the Punjab Assembly session chanted slogans against the Chief Minister of Punjab and the provincial government after the resolution was passed. Meanwhile several journalist unions vowed to discontinue coverage of provincial and national assembly sessions until the resolution was revoked. —DawnNews

Journalists on the other hand, set ablaze copies of resolution in protest and chanted slogans in front of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and members assembly.

Earlier, speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Iqbal granted permission to Mastikhel to present resolution against media after suspending the rules, which was passed unanimously.

The resolution introduced in the assembly by Sanaullah Mastikhel, a member of Muslim League (Nawaz), said some media programmes being used for propaganda against political leaders and democratic and public representatives being maligned.

The resolution said the objectionable footages of women members of assemblies attached with Indian songs is a worst example.

The resolution stressed the media representatives to observe impartiality in coverage, avoid insulting attitude against legislators, discourage baseless reports and demonstrate responsibility.

Ahh, now this is more like it. Finally the mighty have given in to their innate feral nature. Remember when this government came to power it propelled itself as a Champion of free-speech and justice.

How a child (made chairman of the largest political party) uttered the words: Democracy is the best revenge. Then only after a few months in power, the same "democratic first amongst equals" started tightening the noose on "free speech" and gagging the media.

Were these not the same people who criticised the Dictator for his decision to declare emergency? Were these not the same people who cried foul when Geo was banned?

What a nation where Democrats and Dictators talk the same talk and walk the same walk... Only in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Higher Education Commission (HEC) has declared invalid the degrees of two federal ministers Israrullah Zehri and Humayun Aziz, as they received the education leading to the obtainment of the degrees from ‘non-chartered universities’.

The HEC received 70 degrees from 9 universities and Madaris after scrutiny.

Pakistani media has evolved through struggle of many decades and with regard to highlighting social issues and speaking against the civilian as well as military dictatorship. So i dont agree with your comparison of it with Indian media.

Fake degree issue is serious one. Either the parliament should do away with this condition of being graduate for contesting an election or if all these politicians have agreed to the rules put up by Musharraf govt with regard to education of a candidate then i must say they should have fielded their educated siblings instead of taking up fake degrees for contesting themselves.

No actually im just pointing towards the insult they do its same like the indian media do .especially these GEO people they really crush their bones with alot of humiliation and insult.

That is different issue i agree we media people are arrogant and want to grill even the powerful man. (and i believe after fighting for decades against tyranny we atleast deserve to have some arrogance)

If that is the case then they (politicians) should be ashamed of this act shamelessness.

Actually i want media to bring in the people from Election Commission and humilate them too coz they are responsible for checking the degree of all the candidates and clearing them so that they can take part in election.
I think it more of EC fault than these politicians.Do u think these people should also he held accountable for their acts.

And these crazy politicians with fake degrees should be sent to jail for 3 years and they should bear all the expenses of the reelection in there constituency.

We shouldn't be surprised because this is /was expected from cheats and frauds , who claim to represent masses in the assemblies.
This resolution was passed in Punjab Assembly where PMLN is in power and since they are champions in 'fake degree marathon' (and GOD ALMIGHTY knows what else) they have resorted to revenge from the Media. but its not 90's where means of communication were limited and there was only PTV to look at , times have changed but Sharif thinkin hasn't changed a bit . In short they have learnt nothing from their exiles.

Text of Resolution Against Media

This session of the Punjab Assembly shows its concern over irresponsible propaganda being hatched against democratic institutions, political leaders and elected members in some parts of the media in the recent past and is of the opinion that this adverse propaganda may prove consequential for the future of democracy as well as the supremacy of the constitution and the law.
All the elected members in the house unanimously condemn this uncalled for propaganda campaign against democratic institutions, public representatives and demand of the media organizations that they should refrain from presenting baseless, insulting, irresponsible and ill-researched programs about the democratic institutions, public representative and political leaders in the larger interest of the country and the nation.
This house earnestly believes that some television channels have been involved in presenting video footages of honorable women parliamentarians based on immoral Indian songs, which have been the worst example of irresponsible journalism as well as distortion of moral and eastern values, and this act is highly condemnable.
This house also demands of these channels to adopt responsible attitude towards broadcasting objectionable programs about the honorable women parliamentarians of the nation.
This house also acknowledges the role and sacrifices of the media men who believe in responsible and unbiased journalism and pays them homage for their services to the nation. However, this house demands of the upholders of responsible and free press that they should come forward and play their role in discouraging the tendency of character assassination of political as well as non-political personalities through irresponsible reporting by certain media men in their vested interests and fulfillment of their nefarious designs.
This session of the house shows its concern over the use of condemnable language and material during comments on national political figures and discriminations on regional and party affiliation.
This session of the Punjab Assembly demands of the government to constitute committee comprising parliamentarian and the media representative to take cognizance of the situation and submit its recommendations.

IMHO, I don't see any thing objectionable in this resolution, considering the highlighted parts especially.

Is the role played by media, as described in the said resolution, not objectionable?
Should the parliamentarians not given the freedom of speech?
Has media got all the freedom to do, and say, what they are pleased to?
There is no mentioning of fake degrees in the resolution, so can this be related to that scam?
If a person is corrupt, does any one poiting to his/her corruption, have the right to humiliate him/her?

Just few questions for the sake of debate. No hard feelings.
