The Awami National Party (ANP) on Tuesday formally announced that it was withdrawing from the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), saying the opposition alliance had been "hijacked" by some of its members for their own interests.

Speaking at a press conference after a meeting of the party leadership, ANP central vice-president Ameer Haider Khan Hoti criticised the issuance of a show-cause notice to the ANP by PDM secretary general Shahid Khaqan Abbasi of the PML-N for helping the PPP in getting Yousuf Raza Gilani elected as the opposition leader in the Senate.

He said after the PDM's planned long march had to be deferred due to differences among the parties on the issue of resigning from the assemblies, there was a need to end the "disagreements and bitterness" in the alliance.

Later, Hoti recalled, the PPP had expressed reservations over the PML-N candidate for the Senate opposition leader office, Azam Nazeer Tarar.

"Those reservations should have been addressed in a meeting of the PDM leadership. However, it was not done and the PPP's concerns remained," he said, adding that in such a scenario, the ANP openly decided to vote for the PPP candidate (Gilani).
Hoti said instead of allowing the parties to explain their position in the PDM, a show-cause notice was sent to the ANP. He argued the show-cause notices were issue within a party and that "only Asfandyar Wali Khan has the authority to issue a show-cause notice to anyone in the ANP."

The ANP leader said his party had been ready to explain itself, but asked whether explanations were also not due over "the PML-N collaborating with the ruling PTI and PML-Q to get their senators elected in Punjab unopposed; over the loss of the PDM candidates on the Senate technocrat and women seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; and over the JUI-F allegedly forming an alliance with the PTI against the PPP in Larkana".

He added that the ANP had already given the explanation sought from it in the show-cause notice to Abbasi and two other PDM leaders.

"If they have issued us the show-cause notice despite our explanation, it clearly means they want to damage the ANP's reputation. It is very clear two or three parties want to take the decisions for the [entire] PDM," Hoti said, alleging that the ANP and PPP had been "sidelined" by the other PDM parties.

Instead of "attacking in this manner", Hoti continued, the PDM chief should have given the opportunity to all the parties and tried to end the differences among them.

"The ANP cannot be part of a journey in which some elements want to pursue their personal agendas. Therefore, we have reached the conclusion that those who sent the show-cause notice made an unannounced announcement of the end of PDM," he said, announcing that he and other ANP leaders would leave their positions in the PDM.

"The ANP is withdrawing from the process where some specific parties have hijacked the PDM for their own political agendas."
Last week, the PDM had decided to part ways with the PPP and ANP, and form a new alliance of five opposition parties having 27 members in the Senate. The decision was taken at a meeting of senators of five opposition parties, minus the PPP and the ANP, held on Friday. The five parties were namely the PML-N, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F), Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), National Party (NP) and Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal).

They are angry over the PPP’s move to get the slot of the Senate opposition leader with the support of the independent senators known to be affiliated with Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), a party considered to be created by the establishment only weeks before the 2018 general elections and which is a partner with the PTI in the ruling coalition.

The opposition group headed by the PML-N had decided not to accept Gilani as the opposition leader and announced the formation of a separate group.

On Monday, PML-N's Abbasi in his capacity as the PDM secretary general issued show-cause notices to the PPP and ANP for nominating Gilani as the opposition leader in the Senate “in violation of the unanimous decision” of the alliance.

The PPP, however, questioned the authority and the procedure adopted for the issuance of the notice and alleged that “the move is not only aimed at damaging the PPP, but finding an excuse to formally abolish the opposition’s alliance which received big successes against the government during the recent by-polls and the Senate elections.”

The two parties had been asked to give their response within seven days of the receipt of the notice.

Talking to Dawn, Abbasi said he issued the notice after receiving a go-ahead from PDM president Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who has suspended his political activities for the past few days due to some health issues.

Following Awami National Party's exit from the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), the JUI-F and PML-N Tuesday have strongly reacted to the move.

ANP took the decision after its leaders were issued show-cause notices to explain their actions during the recently-held Senate polls.

Announcing the decision at a press conference in Peshawar, ANP's Ameer Haider Khan Hoti said the PTI and the JUI-F have joined hands to give the PPP a tough time in Larkana.

Reacting to ANP's hard-hitting presser, JUI-F's secretary-general Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said there were several ways to caving in and selling out.

"This is the most humiliating move in political history ... ANP and PPP's actions have led to the world laughing at us," the JUI-F senator said.

"Despite all this, we went and spoke to ANP's leadership and they said the move was made based on friendly ties. However, Hoti said the party had made a wrong decision (supporting Yousuf Raza Gilani for Opposition leader in Senate)."

Haideri warned ANP it had made a "blatant" mistake after blaming PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for lacking leadership.

"ANP should not have blamed Fazlur Rehman."

Similarly, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said ANP had made several sacrifices for the cause of democracy, as she expressed sorrow over their departure.

However, she said PPP's decision to get their member elected as the Opposition leader in Senate was against the PDM's September 20 Charter — as they got support from treasury benches, and ANP backed them.

However, Aurangzeb reminded that the PDM had decided the Opposition leader would be from PML-N.
"If Gilani would have come back to PDM after his loss as Senate chairman .... then Nawaz Sharif would not have turned down his request to become the Opposition leader."

On Monday, Pakistan People Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has announced that his political party is resigning from all posts of the opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

While addressing a press conference in Karachi after chairing the central executive committee (CEC) session, Bilawal made the announcement for resigning from all posts of the opposition alliance in a protest to the issuance of show-cause notice.

He said the CEC had come to the conclusion that resignations from the national and provincial assemblies should be "like an atom bomb."

Bilawal said the PPP's stance that the Opposition should not "abandon the Parliament and the Senate battleground" had been vindicated.

He said if the PPP had listened to other political parties in the Opposition and boycotted the Senate elections and by-elections, then it would have harmed democracy.

He further said that 'we are standing side by side with the ANP and we will take decisions after consultations, PPP is a political party and we respect all opposition parties as well,' he added.
