Another uprising brewing in Tamilnadu

Are you denying that the seeds of the conflict were not sown by reminiscing the historical strife between Dhuttagamani and Elara? Wasn't Dhuttagamani's war against Elara motivated by religion and encouraged by Buddhist monks? Didn't the modern day monks glorify Dhuttagamani and were inspired by Mahavamsa?

No one really know Elara was a Hindu or not. Some scholars think that he was a Jain. Dutugamunu was the main protagonist in the first part of the Mahavansa chronicle. Modern day glorification of the king Dutugamunu stems from his brave deeds he had done for his country. Not because he was a Buddhist and he killed the "evil Hindus".

Where I got this was from pro-Tiger Tamil nationalist writers who were critical of the Buddhist monks roles in fanning the flames of majoritarian supremacy. It doesn't have to be a legitimate grievance. But the fact that one of the parties in the conflict (or their propagandists) believed that there is a religious element to it, and your admission too that there indeed existed a Sinhala Buddhist Nationalism (yes, even if it did after European colonialism) does indicate there was a religious element to the conflict. It may or may not have gotten blurred later and evolved into a purely language-centric conflict, given how the LTTE leadership was mostly Marxist/atheist and SL govt., being a democratically elected secular govt., cannot have any religious affiliation. But are you denying that there never existed a Buddhist supremacist view promoted by the monks? What about Dharmapala's views?

There is no religious aspect for the Sinhalese-Tamil conflict in Sri Lanka. It has only the ethnic aspect. Sri Lankan government bestowed a special place for Buddhism just to continue the tradition of the ancient kings. Sri Lanka is a secular state and all other religions have the similar rights. People should understand the prominent place Buddhism shared with the Sinhalese culture. They are inseparable to begin with. Many people tend to forget this crucial factor.

And when you talk about how Mahavamsa praises Elara (or Ellalan), it also does justify the war on Tamils by Duttagamani, does it not? It isn't even about whether Mahavamsa was good or bad. But whether Mahavamsa used by Sinhalese nationalists to assume their superiority or not? And if they did, wasn't there a religious element to it?

Elara was an foreign invader. Dutugamunu fought with him only because he invaded the island and conquered it for himself. It wasn't a war with Tamils. Mahavansa is a chronicle of the historical events that has happened in the island of Sri Lanka for the past 2500 years. It is not a authentic account of the past history but a valuable source of information for archaeologists and historians. Sinhalese nationalist use it to debunk the myth of Tamil homeland of Sri Lanka.

Sinhala Buddhists either must have been dozing in the Daham Pasellas or are in a damage control mode, to deny Sinhala Buddhism racism in Mahavamsa

The doctrine of Jathika Chintanaya (Mahavamsa Mindest ) links the 3 - country , race and religion i.e

1) Chosen Buddhist country (Sri lanka - Dhamma deepa)
2) Chosen race (Sinhalas)
3) Protection of Buddhism for 5000 yrs (Buddha sasana)

He, Mahanama, in his Mahavamsa justifies, and glorifies the murder by Dutugemunu, of thousands of Tamils he called “invaders”, by equating them with “sinners, and wild beasts”. So, where is Buddhism in that? Thus, how can one regard the Mahavamsa, as a Buddhist guide?

From an early age, the innocent and pure minds, of Sinhalese Buddhist children, are ‘brainwashed’, by foolish parents and teachers, with Sinhala-Buddhist racism; Mahavamsa Buddhism!

They are taught, to regard, the ‘other’, who is not a Sinhala-Buddhist, as “an invader”. They are taught, not to trust this ‘other’, who does not belong to Sri Lanka, and is only a ‘guest’, of the ‘benevolent’ Sinhala-Buddhists.

Thus, they are taught, at an early age, that all Tamils, Muslims, Hindus, Christians (Sinhala Christians included) and others, must be chased away, from Mahavamsa-Buddhist Sri Lanka, just as in ancient times, when King Dutugemunu, killed or chased away the “invaders”, to Tamil Nadu.

People that haven't read the Mahavansa shouldn't go running around ranting about it
