KARACHI (April 15 2010): Moving towards privatisation, Pakistan Railways (PR) has privatised another passenger train on Wednesday. According to sources, Fareed Express, which is running between Karachi to Lahore, has been given to Pakistan Railway Advisory and Consultancy Service (PRACS) a semi-private company, which has already been running two passenger trains of PR.
Through a notification, they said, the authority of ticketing of the train was given to PRACS from April 15 2010. The private company was also having the same responsibility of the two passenger trains Hazara Express and Rohi Express. However, terming the move as anti-PR and public interest, Manzoor Razi, Chairman Railways Workers Union (RWU) said that railway authority was moving towards privatisation which would deprive the poverty stricken people of the only poor friendly source of transportation.
He said the high ups in railways were not only acting against the passengers' interest but also the PR as the private company was only holding the ticketing system even using the railways' own offices, trains, engines, employees/staff.
"The government should only encourage those private companies which bring their own engines/train," he added Interestingly, those staffs who were serving the private company were also enjoying the salaries, perks and other facilities from both the railways and PRACS, he added.
