KARACHI (April 15 2010): Moving towards privatisation, Pakistan Railways (PR) has privatised another passenger train on Wednesday. According to sources, Fareed Express, which is running between Karachi to Lahore, has been given to Pakistan Railway Advisory and Consultancy Service (PRACS) a semi-private company, which has already been running two passenger trains of PR.

Through a notification, they said, the authority of ticketing of the train was given to PRACS from April 15 2010. The private company was also having the same responsibility of the two passenger trains Hazara Express and Rohi Express. However, terming the move as anti-PR and public interest, Manzoor Razi, Chairman Railways Workers Union (RWU) said that railway authority was moving towards privatisation which would deprive the poverty stricken people of the only poor friendly source of transportation.

He said the high ups in railways were not only acting against the passengers' interest but also the PR as the private company was only holding the ticketing system even using the railways' own offices, trains, engines, employees/staff.

"The government should only encourage those private companies which bring their own engines/train," he added Interestingly, those staffs who were serving the private company were also enjoying the salaries, perks and other facilities from both the railways and PRACS, he added.

wat do u guys say? gud move or bad?

good move, but it depends on the fare and ticketing, if the prices remain more or less same, and the service improves good move, other wise if the govt was capable to fund its development bad move to sell public property. companies should be compeled by PR to invest heavily while controlling the fares, the cheap rides with become more comfy

the peoples party is actually a socialist type of party, it is going actually in opposite direction by looking at their mandate dont you think by privatizing govt property?

well look at it this way, the private couldnt do any more damage to the railways i mean they couldnt possibly be worse than the guys who are already running railways so we have no way but to go up. I think this is a huge investment market and the chineese companies should be brought it in to reconstruct and reinvent pakistan railways.

not sure about common man benefiting from it, but at least this will allow us to get rid of the massive losses we face every yr

1. They have given a premium route to the private company, they should given the loss making route to turn into a profit making route.

2. The good management is needed privatization is not a magic wind. In India despite of being run by government railway is profit making even when though the fares are not revised for years.

3. BTW, In India private companies runs 2-3 trains for the premium high class tourists and the tickets prices are in thousands of dollars.

4. About the common man the ticket prices in India are among lowest in the world.

Take lalu we wanna get rid of him but he will be beneficial for you to turn around your railways.

Not always true...Electricity was privatised in Delhi just to relieve people from long cuts, poor management and electricity theft...Boy they pretty much fukced it up(lot of allegations that meters are running fast etc etc)....

Why Man...Why you need China everywhere??? Why not the huge investment market profit should go to Pakistan only???? In case you are short of funds then invide FDI's however why to give your contract of Railway industry(backbone of any country) to Chinese company(for that matter any country)??

Yeah but at the end of the Day how Much GOI is getting out of it is what you should be looking at if the Government is making money out of it instead of losing billions/yr.
Crown corporations lose more then they make as no one is held accountable at the end of the day.

I have been asking this question for last 20Years Most call me stupid and go on to import instead of looking for local supplier as its much easier just to have some one else do it then to do it your self.

1. They have given a premium route to the private company, they should given the loss making route to turn into a profit making route.

it will be ideal to turn the loss making routes into profit making and then privatise to get maximum benefit. and this is wat the gov plan is. see how it goes.

true but at least government wont be paying for all the losses.
