JAMMU: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle at a camp in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district on Sunday, officials said.
Constable PK Dass, posted in 168th battalion, was on sentry duty when he shot himself with his rifle at Uchad camp in Mendhar area, they said.
Dass was taken to the sub-district hospital and was later referred to the Military Hospital in Udhampur where he succumbed to the injuries.
The reason behind him taking such an extreme step was not known immediately, the officials said.

This time its a suicide. Other popular methods for reducing head count employed by IA include falling in deep gorges, bunker wall collapses, personal disputes, road accidents, fratricides etc. I could suggest loose motions and diarrhea as some of the other possibilities to reduce excuse-load from deep gorges, suicides and road accidents.

Just out of curiosity, how do you shoot yourself with a service rifle in a suicide? Presumably a rifle has a long barrel and seems unwieldy for the purpose.

But you're exactly right. A pistol would be far far more practical, under the chin, orally, or at the side of the head.

Suicides by RIFLE ....getting the trajectory is difficult as your arm would be extended at the elbow. The weight would be substantially disruptive to your required movement and body positioning. You'd be unable to flex your finger on the trigger with enough force (due to the arm being extended at the elbow)and would probably need to use your thumb instead. It could be done vertically under the chin while seated with the rifle butt on the floor and using your thumb for the trigger.

But the question remains, given it's so messy, technically harder due to anatomy and weapon weight/shape, and has a higher risk of failure, if a pistol is available why would anyone use a rifle?

Of course, we know the real answer. These "suicides by service rifle" (which are remarkably common for Indian Army deaths on the ceasefire line) are actually cases of *assisted* suicide.

Technically I guess they can pull off a private Gomer.

Doable for sure, using the thumb, but the point is, if a pistol is available, that would be much much easier. The movement required with a rifle is physically difficult.

Great movie btw. They used a genuine drill sergeant for that role.

I can imagine the poor Indian soldier; alone, cold, hungry, hated, spat at, assaulted and shot at at every opportunity and cowering for his life. Hated by his own officers, no wonder he ended it.
