But in India we have been successful in dividing the Shias and Sunnis divided with the help of fundamentalist/true Muslims.

Exceptions are there -
1- When in minority. E.g. India, US, UK, EU and everywhere.
2- Hands are full of money. E.g. US hegemony on Pakistan even though we have daily protest on roads against US.

But you are correct, when they become majority and no extra favour being done, they could hardly co-exist even in equal terms. Nothing to be proud of.
