Family members of victims of a shooting rampage comfort each other in Samson, Ala.

An Alabama man with an assault weapon burned down his mother's house around her, shot his grandparents, aunt and uncle dead, then killed five other people Tuesday before turning the gun on himself, authorities said.

Coffee County coroner Robert Preachers identified the shooter as Michael McLendon and said he was in his 30s. It was unclear if the mother, Lisa McClendon, who died, had been shot.

Authorities gave no motive for the rampage that claimed victims in several homes in the small towns of Kinston, Samson and Geneva and along the highway connecting them. Two of the dead were a sheriff deputy's wife and 3-month-old child.

Several other people were injured, including Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey, who was saved by his bulletproof vest, and a state trooper wounded by flying glass when his car was hit with seven slugs.

Investigators Tuesday night were looking into possible shootings in other locations. "This is one of the most tragic events ever in Geneva County," state Sen. Harri Anne Smith said.

The carnage began in the late afternoon in Kinston, where Michael McLendon burned down his mother's home. Officials said McClendon then went to nearby Samson and shot his grandparents, aunt and uncle.

The sheriff deputy's wife and child were slaughtered in their mobile home, officials said. McClendon also killed another person at a Samson supply store and a woman at a service station, they said. The location of the shooting of the 10th victim was unclear.

Cops said McClendon fired randomly at people as his maroon Mitsubishi Eclipse traveled along Highway 52 toward Geneva's Reliable Metal Products, which makes grills and vents for heating and air conditioning systems, mainly for hotels.

"He was just driving down the street shooting at people sitting on their porches," Smith said. "A family was just sitting on the porch and they were shot."

Cops caught up with McClendon at Reliable, where he was said to be a past or present employee. After firing 30 rounds at the officers, he went inside and shot himself to death.

Why doesn't anyone call Michael McLendon a terrorist? If a Muslim did this, this would be in every channel and the first word would be "terrorist".

lol america is a funny country, its a muderers country,on another forum an American lost 3 frnds who were shot, availing their constitutional right lol

Americans have surely gone insane , they have no purpose left in this world , and that is why they are converting to ISLAM ( because it gives them a purpose in life ). Islam is the largest growing religion in USA.

This is a major sign of a society which is taking its last breaths , on the brink of finishing.

Now almost every month we see these type of shootings , majority of them being in top notch universities.

Dont laugh at this, this is a serious issue. The purpose of me posting this news is to show that America also has its fair share of terrorists. If U.S. wants to wage a war against terror, they should start in their own country. Murder, rape, suicide, robbery are all acts of terrorism and all these things happen too often in U.S.

Depends on what your definition of terrorism is. No standard defination exist. This incident is not a act of war against a government. Its more of mass killing.

The highest rates of Murder , rape , suicide and robbery are in America , they can't control their own damn people , how do we expect them to bring peace to the rest of the world.

Nevertheless, this incident can and in fact should be classified as terrorism. Terrorism can be defined as the indiscriminate and senseless murder of innocent people. Most Indians have the tendency and are obsessed with equating terrorism with Pakistan, Muslims and Islam in general. Your denial doesn't surprise me. Your reluctance to classify this incident as terrorism has to do with your unconscious bias. You have reserved and attached terrorism with Islam, Pakistan etc. Any sane being would without any hesitance condemn this insane act of terrorism.

Any vionecne affects (often) innocent people. when a robber snatches a chain from a running bike, it really hurts the victim physically and psychologically. is it terrorism???

terrorism is use of violence againt unarmed civilians to achieve a political objective.

u r desperation to lable this 'terrorism' is just a lame attempt to dilute the serious issue of terrorism and sidestepping the real issue of gun control. too obvious. and this is nothing to do with indians genius, none of the western press is also calling this terrorism :)

There is a stark difference between a robbery and cool blooded murder. Comparing both is like comparing apples to oranges. Learn to differentiate between both.

Your denial that this heinous murder of innocent people isn't terror is a reminder that you're willing to apply double standards when it suits you. I've already pointed out that the problem is related to gun culture. Read the my first post in this thread before making assumptions or accusations. Well, it certainly does portray how quick some Indians are to make an exception and downgrade this or other alike incidents as a crime. Of course, the Western press will never term this as terrorism. They too have reserved those terms specifically for Islam, Muslims and everything else related to it. Now tell me whose the genius?

Where did you get that definition from?

Terrorism is the act of terrorising. Murder, rape, robbery all terrorises people so its all an act of terrorism with murder and rape being worse acts of terrorism than robbery.

Tell me what does terror mean?

terrorism is use of violence againt unarmed civilians to achieve a political objective.

We are all aware of the accusations leveled against Pakistan on this count, so lets focus on how this definition applies to India for a moment:

Your definition would imply that the 'use of violence (rape, extra judicial killings etc.) by the Indian security forces in Kashmir as documented by human rights organizations are then 'terrorism'.

Your definition would also imply that Indian support for violent elements in East Pakistan before 1971 was also terrorism.

Your definition would imply that Indian support for insurgents in Baluchistan is terrorism.

Similarly, apply this to the US:

US support for Samoza's in Nicaragua, Pinochet and various other dictators and murderous rebels and regimes in Latin America was SUPPORT FOR TERRORISM.

In Guatemala, 40 percent of the indigenous population was exterminated by a regime sponsored by the US. In percentage terms that is perhaps the most severe genocide in history. Surely terrorism, wouldn't you say?

How often is this reality reconciled with the definition you suggested?

If a Muslim ever committed a crime like this, the media would mention the person's religion, they would mention the person's background, they would use the word "terrorist" to define him, and this news would be all over the media in every channel and in every newspaper.

None of this is good news, but no one saying these states
are failing. But if you look at the signs of failure, these are
doing as badly as we are in uncontrolled violence at least.

I'll only reply to the part abt india.

Yes if systematically used to achieve the goal of oppressing the kashmiri nationalists, but acts done by errant under pressure trigger happy soldiers are NOT terrorism. india had prosecuted and punished scores of such soldiers.

Your definition would also imply that Indian support for violent elements in East Pakistan before 1971 was also terrorism.

Yes if CIVILIANS were targetted (not collateral damage)

Your definition would imply that Indian support for insurgents in Baluchistan is terrorism

Yes if CIVILIANS are targetted (not collateral damage) and IF there's indeed support
