The Border Policeman who confiscated a bicycle from an eight-year old Palestinian girl in Hebron was suspended from active duty on Tuesday, after a video of the incident went viral on YouTube.
The event itself took place over a week ago, on July 25, and was captured on video by a volunteer from the Israeli non-governmental group B’Tselem, who filmed it from the window of a nearby building.
B’Tselem, however, posted the one minute and 12 second clip only on Monday. It showed the border police officer running after the girl, Anwar Burkan, on a street near the Cave of the Patriarchs.
It is considered to be a highly sensitive area of the mostly Palestinian city and is heavily guarded by security forces.
The pedestrian area in front of the Cave of the Patriarchs is blocked off to Palestinians, who are directed to use an alternative path behind a concrete barrier and a small wire fence. Still some Palestinian traffic is allowed and small children can often be seen playing near there.
In the video Anwar screamed as the policeman approached and clutched her bicycle. He put his foot on the bicycle to keep her from taking it. After a few seconds she ran off crying and screaming in the direction of her brother, Ibrahim 6, who held a large plastic toy in his hands. The policeman walked toward them, causing the two children to run away all together in fright.
There is a break in the video and then the policeman is shown throwing the bicycle in the bushes.
The Border Police said it regretted the incident, which it took very seriously. The police have opened an investigation into the incident, a spokesman added.
The children’s father, Mjoub, said that Anwar and Ibrahim had been playing outside for about half-an-hour when the policeman stopped them.
After the incident Anwar came home in tears and said she was “afraid,” he recalled.
“The [officer] took the bicycle because the settlers and the army are afraid of all Palestinians,” Mjoub said.
The large West Bank city of over 215,000 people is under the control of the Palestinian Authority, save for a small section where close to 1,000 Jews live under Israeli military and civilian rule. It is often the flashpoint for violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
In the last nine months, Hebron has been on the scenes of multiple attacks by Palestinians, mostly against security forces. In December, Genady Kaufman, 41, of Kiryat Arba died of wounds he sustained in a Palestinian knife attack right next to the Cave of the Patriarchs.
But the incident that has drawn the most attention occurred in March, when Abdel Fatah al-Sharif, 24, and Ramzi al-Kasrawi attacked two soldiers in Hebron, near the Tel Rumeida neighborhood.
They lightly wounded one of them, before IDF soldiers shot them. Kasrawi was killed and Sharif was wounded and immobilized.
As he lay on the ground, IDF soldier Elor Azaria shot him. He is now standing trial for that shooting.
That incident was also caught on video by a B’Tselem volunteer.
Meretz MK Esawi Frej said that clearly the incident with the bicycle was not the same since no one was injured or died.
What happened in Hebron last week, he said, was simply about “the banality of evil and the moral degeneration of a soldier who decided to harass an eight year old girl, just because he felt like it.

I am Shia Kashmiri and you are lying my ancestors were convert to Islam from Kashmiri Pandit, We all support freedom struggle and i know many shias also fighting side by side with our sunni brothers but since we belongs to minority Muslim sect hence you see very small numbers of active freedom fighters.
We are Azad and happy with Pakistan and struggling and will struggle for freedom of Indian occupied Kashmir.@dani958 buddy please return the bike

You are lying and your forces plus Govt tries to create divide in Muslim unity in Kashmir but failed miserably. The original and most lethal fighter active in India belongs to Lashkar e Karbila (Shia freedom fighter Group) but unlike sunni brother they kept low profile and never claimed their pig hunting trophies. Ask from any security personal from Kashmir.
