Pakistan has suspended the import of cotton and other agriculture commodities, including vegetables, from India due to rising tensions between the two countries along the LoC, a media report here said. Officials of Department of Plant Protection (DPP) said that import of agri items from India through the Wagah border crossing and Karachi port and issuing permits for future imports has been halted, the Dawn reported.

Cotton importers and customs clearing agents claimed that the department had stopped the import of agriculture commodities from India without a warning or written order because of increase in tensions across the LoC.

Imran Shami, chief of DPP which is a subordinate department of the national food security and research ministry, however sought to dispel the impression. "We have stopped import of tomatoes and other fresh vegetables in order to protect our farmers. We have enough tomato and other vegetables stocks, which we import from India only in case of shortages in the domestic market," he said. The reason behind the "suspension" of cotton imports from India was, nevertheless, different, he said.

"No. We have not stopped cotton imports from India. It has just been halted over reports that the Indian exporters are not meeting our bio-security conditions. We're looking into these reports and will lift restriction on cotton imports if our apprehensions are proved wrong," Shami said.

He said only those cotton consignments would be allowed to enter Pakistan through surface or sea routes where importers had already secured permits from his department and carried phyto-sanitary certificates. "Our cotton consignments are not being allowed to enter Pakistan through Wagah and Karachi for reasons known to the ministry but cheaper, subsidized Indian yarn is being brought in without any let or hindrance. At least 11 trucks of Indian yarn entered Pakistan on Thursday when the department stopped cotton consignments from coming to this side of the border," a textile factory owner told Dawn.

He said the suspension of cotton import from India would create a huge problem for the textile exporters as the truncated domestic crop target of 11.25 million bales for this year appeared difficult if not impossible to meet. "The industry requires 14 million bales. We will still be short by three million bales of cotton even if the crop target is achieved," he said. He said cotton shortages after the ban on Indian imports would make domestic prices shoot up at the expense of exports.

Pakistan had imported 2.7 million bales of cotton (1 bale is 170 kgs) - about 40% of India's total cotton exports in 2015-16 - due to crop failure that wiped off 0.5% of GDP growth. The industry is expecting to import 2 million bales this year.

:pakistan:

Good decision...why we were even importing from them in the first place?...they have very unhygienic and human poo filled farming in India so such cotton can damage the health of countless Pakistanis and any cloth made from it will stink permanently no matter how many times it has been through laundry.
bro,You are so understanding of India. I admire you

Imran Shami said they want the extra 2 million cotton which was being imported through India due to lost suffered in 2011 by devastating flood and they didn't reach the target of 14 million bales. Here an old article;

Pakistan imports two million cotton bales from India
June 22, 2011

Despite claims of being self-sufficient in cotton production, Pakistan imported two million bales of cotton worth Rs 40 billion. Well-placed sources told Business Recorder here on Tuesday that total cotton import from India so far stood at two million bales while deals of 4-5 lac bales were in the pipeline.

Pakistan missed the cotton production target for 2010-11 by producing 11.7 million bales against the target of 14 million bales due to devastating floods. The estimated loss to the cotton crop due to last year''s flash floods in cotton growing areas of Punjab and Sindh stands at over Rs 120 billion. Pakistan is the world''s fourth biggest cotton producer, but often has to import to meet the demand of local textile sector, which accounts for about 60 per cent of the total exports.

"The overall domestic requirement of the country stands at 15.5 million bales but due to the shortage of gas and electricity, most of the textile units have closed their business. So, the domestic market''s requirement has decreased to 14.5 million bales," the sources said.

Sources said that Pakistan would cultivate cotton on 8.01 million acres this year, which is about eight per cent higher than the area under the crop last year. Sources said that India increased its production from 14.0 million 170-Kg bales in 2003-2004 to 33.28 million 170-Kg bales in 2010-11 - an increase of 136.0 per cent in eight years by increasing cotton growing area just about 44 per cent. "Now the Indian cotton exporters, who have one million cotton bales in stock have asked the cotton importers world-wide to place their orders," they added.

Cotton sowing has been completed in Punjab but shortage of urea fertiliser has raised doubts in the minds regarding the productivity of the crop. A senior official of the Punjab Agriculture department told this scribe, "The government has decided to import 50,000 tons of urea in the very first week of July from China and Russia but the Ministry of Finance has directed the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) to extend the deal by importing additional 50,000 tons."

The agriculture sector in the country registered 1.2 per cent growth during the financial year 2010-11 as against the growth target of 3.8 per cent and previous year''s performance of 0.6 per cent. Major crops accounting for 31.1 per cent of agriculture value-added, registered a negative growth of 4.0 per cent for second year in a row mainly because of decrease in production of rice and cotton 99.9 and 11.3 per cent, respectively. Minor crops accounting for 10.9 per cent of overall agriculture value-addition grew by 4.8 per cent as against the negative growth of last two years.

"But it is too late now and would have an adverse impact upon the crop''s productivity as in the domestic market, due to shortage of the commodity it is being sold at Rs 1500 per 50 kg bag in spite of Rs 1250 per 50 kg. Obviously, the poor farmers can not afford it all," the official said. He added, "not only cotton, the other major crops like rice and sugar cane would also effected".

:D:D:D From India, we used to get poor quality to meet the demands of some specific sections of our society. Of course they don't care about the brands or do not have enough money to pay for them. To China, we are exporting our best quality high end brands that are now made in China.:lol::lol:

Now this decision will force our those sections of society to wear much better quality cloths. I don't mind... This is called raising the standard of living... :D:D:D

Don't try to be a troll with Pakistanis.
