Are any of us cold-blooded enough to want someone with the kind of government experience that was on display to become the Prime Minister of the country? Anyone noticed the widespread replication of Gujarat-like behaviour all over, but specifically in the Punjab (BJP in alliance), Haryana (BJP government), Rajasthan (BJP government), Gujarat (BJP government), Maharashtra (BJP government), Madhya Pradesh (BJP government) and Chhatisgarh (BJP government)?
I understand what you're saying. But my point is simply that the people voted for what they desired. They wanted economic development and Hindutva. They received economic development and Hindutva.
Our problem is not that our friend is trying to be someone he isn't, or wasn't. Our problem is that he is being his own true self. That's worse.
The biggest issue I have with Donald Trump is that he is not who he claims to be. He is a Manhattan Billionaire who made most of his wealth from his father's business/money. His own business ventures often ended in failure. Despite this, he made millions in salary from these same unsuccessful businesses. He also proceeded to claim huge tax breaks from the losses he ran up. Some businessman...
Yet, this same person claims to be the champion of the working class and the downtrodden. He says that he will help them, but most of the policies he supports do exactly the opposite. If he was like Modi and was his true self, I wouldn't have as much of a problem. Democracy is democracy, and the people will vote for what they want. No matter how foolish their desires may be. But the fact that he took the votes of people who were fooled by his public persona is the real issue.
In 2014, Modi's NDA received the highest vote share in the election, and won a majority of seats in the Lok Sabha. Trump on the other hand, received
fewer votes than Hillary Clinton, despite winning the election. Not to mention that he remains incredibly unpopular and had a lower favorable rating than Hillary Clinton too. Many those who voted for him, did so because he was not her, and did not actually like him. Unlike Modi, who was very popular and won on his own name (though the Gandhi family did help him a bit).
I, of course, agree with you. However, the issue is not merely that Trump is a "sicko", as you put it. Rather it is that he has no experience in government whatsoever. Say what you will about Modi (and there is much to say), but he ran a government that served tens of millions of people. Whatever your views might have been of the policies of his government, he was an elected public official that served in government and knows how it functions.
Trump, on the other hand, has no idea how a government functions. That's the issue. A shady businessman/former reality-TV star is about to become the next President of the United States. That's quite concerning. It's not his policies that scare me the most, it's his total lack of experience in government.
