American Mac One Company wants to invest Tk 25,500 crore in Swarnadwip Maheshkhali

Cox's Bazar District Correspondent | Release time: January 26, 2022, 11:20 AM

US-based Mac One Development Company Ltd. has expressed interest in investing Tk 25,500 crore in the Maheshkhali Economic Zone in Cox's Bazar.

They want to refine the oil there and export it to the Asian market. Mac One has already sent a proposal to the Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) for 500 acres of land in Maheshkhali.

The company plans to invest $3,000 million in the economic zone, which is about Tk 25,500 crore in Bangladeshi currency.

According to BEZA's information, the US company sent it a letter for the first time in September 2020 saying that it was interested in investing in the economic zone at Dhalghata in Maheshkhali. They sent another letter to Beza on January 23.

It said that if lands are available in the economic zone, they would refine 200,000 barrels of crude oil per day and export it to the Asian market alone. Kerry McKenna, president of Mac One Development, also expressed interest in coming to Bangladesh in April to discuss the issue in detail.

The US company added that the proposed oil refining project would provide employment to 7,000 skilled and semi-skilled workers. Workers will be taken from Bangladesh. Preliminary studies have shown that an oil refinery, as well as a jetty, will be required.

They want to take land on a 50-year lease. The investment will be financed by the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Exim Bank). The company says there is now an epidemic in the world. They want to come to Bangladesh as soon as the situation improves.

Beza officials say Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar is geographically very important. Japan and Singapore have already invested there. Besides, work of some power plants is also going on. And this new proposal came from the United States.

@bluesky bhai excellent news!

One small correction if I may. Investments authority is named BEZA, not BEJA. Article writer misspelled it.

Thanks. I have corrected the word to BEZA. By the way, I checked the internet. It does not say the American company deals with refineries or oil.

However, I have seen similar Japanese companies who are called SHOSHA that sign contracts with other countries or foreign companies and do the works in cooperation with each other. SHOSHA companies usually provide finances to their partner companies. They own banks in Japan.

I remember one news whereby the Libyan govt proposed to build an oil refinery in BD from where to supply the products throughout SE Asia. Like all other big-talking Arab projects, this one also did not materialize. Now, Gaddafi is dead.

I hope this American project will successfully start the business. It will bring big benefits to the country.

Great investment if it materialises. BD produces and refines oil but the amount is negligible.

This will allow us to develop this sector. 200k barrels is not that much, BD is able to absorb most of this. BD current daily consumption is around 135k barrels. Surely inhome refined crude will cost us less than refined petrolium from mid east.

I am doubtful about the veracity of this report, seems someone from AL hatched it. In the US. companies don't call themselves "Ltd." (Limited) companies like in South Asia. Typically for industrial holding companies in the US the acronym used is Incorporated or "Inc.".

The half-educated itar lowlife at BEZA who spread this BS news does not know the difference...

In any case calling BS on this one, until someone clarifies and has better sources, there is no "MAC ONE" company anywhere in the US.

Probably a shell company formed by bigwigs at AL, just like that British "investor" company who decided on investing in a rail link to Payra. Turns out these were Sheikh Rehana's family members....

I tried to find out the website for this American Mac Company. It does not exist. So, you can understand how low we people are!! The GoB regularly asks the newspapers to print many fictitious news.

I feel very sad for the country and get angry with this BAL govt. Tomorrow our FM Mustafa Kamal will come out with another fiction that the BD GDP is nearing $500 billion.

In this forum, you are the lowest of all the BAL Chetona League (BCL) cronies.

Better you don't make personal attacks anymore.
lmao, mate i dont even take you seriously anymore

Yes most likely a shell company, couldn't find any Mac One company either.

On the bright side- Bangladeshi stolen money will return to Bangladesh, and not gonna be used to buy a mansion in Toronto.

I think the Canadian and US Govts. are about to launch money laundering campaigns against these thieves that ran away with huge funds. I don't know if the money will come back to Bangladesh. The leaders and bigwigs already got their cuts and those are parked in S'pore banks where money laundering rules are (ahem) rather lax.

Below is the AML in Singapore. I think our thieves should immigrate to North Korea, pay 80% to its President for Life, and keep the remainder to live in a Paradise called North Korea.

One point. There are many Jamaati and BNP families hiding in the Western countries after purchasing big houses with as usual corrupt money. All of them will come under the screen without fail.

Modern Singapore has been built by the hard labor of Lee Kuan. So, Singapore is a country of rules and laws, unlike our Golden Bangladesh. Note what Mujib once said on corruption.

আমার দলের মানুষজন দ্যাশের জন্য এতো খাটাখাটি করছে। ওরা তো একটু আধটু পয়সা এদিক সেদিক করবেই।

AML legislation in Singapore

The primary law in Singapore relating to money laundering is the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act (CDSA). Sections 43, 44, 46, and 47 of the CDSA cover the prevention of money laundering and its criminalization. With respect to terrorist financing, Singapore passed the Terrorism Suppression of Financing Act in 2002.

The man himself was not corrupt or ill-principled (what I heard from people who met him).

However - he did surround himself with total scum - whose corrupt behavior he tolerated in exchange of loyalty (including family members, especially his sons, whose exploits included "picking up" pretty wives of Army officers).

Another flaw was believing Indian "advisers" to raise a proxy force (Rakkhi Bahini, with Indian uniform, trained by Indian RAW advisers) to protect himself.

In the end, the whole family paid the price with their lives for his follies.

Funny enough, this behavior is also evident in Hasina (toleration of corruption in exchange for loyalty).

She is paranoid about this, hence the manipulation of the Army, Navy AF commands.

Yes, Mujib was not corrupt, but Hasina Bibi is totally corrupt and greedy. I do not believe anything mischievous by RAB/ Police was not done without the knowledge of Hasina. I can say, everything was done under the implicit or standing order of Hasina.

Now she will be paying the price. I do not think she and her party can win in a fair election. I personally dislike that corrupt BNP as well.

Politics itself is not for the saint-like people but corruption cannot be condoned. It is the father of all the mismanagement. BD needs new and good quality people in the top politics whereby the Chief Executive is surrounded by good but intelligent people if not saints.

I also hope the next govt goes after heavy industrialization by the private sector for which an Industrial Bank must be re-setup. Only industrial production can enlarge the wealth base of the country. This is what is happening in China.
