American journalist: ‘US run by wealth'
A political commentator says he believes Americans live in a “plutocracy” rather than a “democracy.”
“The main problem here is that America is not a democracy. America is a plutocracy. It is ruled by wealth,” E. Michael Jones, editor of Culture Wars magazine told Press TV in a phone interview on Wednesday.
Jones was commenting on recent poll results that show more and more Americans are becoming tired of their government’s interventionist policies around the globe.
He said US citizens do not want their government to meddle in other countries’ affairs, but, he noted that, their voice is not reflected in the US administration’s foreign policy.
A democratic system is based on the “one man, one vote” logic. “But the real system in America is one dollar one vote,” he said, adding that this means “billionaires have billions of votes and the average man has an insignificant one vote.”
“American foreign policy is not run by the people of the United States, it is run by these elite clubs” in favor of their interest, he stated.
The new Wall Street Journal/NBC News survey shows that nearly half of Americans want Washington to “be less active in world affairs” while only 19 percent call for a more active role.
The findings are indicative of “an anti-interventionist current that sweeps across party lines” in the United States.
The survey also showed that approval of US President Barack Obama's handling of foreign policy plunged to the lowest level of his presidency, with just 38 percent approving.
