FE Report
Incidents of mugging have increased alarmingly in the city and its adjoining areas in recent days ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr despite tight security measures taken by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
Such incidents, in most cases, occur in crowded places like shopping centres and branches of different commercial banks, with muggers dodging eyes of law-enforcing agencies.
Shamsul Alam, a shop owner at Anarkoli Shopping Mall, told the FE that six mugging incidents took place in Mouchak and Malibagh shopping areas over the last six days, prompting the owners' association to intensify its own security measures to check such offences there.
"Female pickpockets are also ruling the city streets in recent days as we received some complaints about them," he said, adding that such criminal activities have triggered panic among the citizens.
Habibur Rahman, a banker and also a resident of Eskaton area, said a car carrying three unidentified youths parked before him in front of Meena Bazar at Eskaton while he was returning home on July 30 last from a Mouchak shopping mall.
"They (muggers) demanded all of belongings at gunpoint and took away my mobile phones, Tk 7,000 in cash and even the clothes, which I bought for my family members," he said.
Delwar Hossain, proprietor of Koli Enterprise at Mohanagar Complex of Phulbaria, said each day at least two muggers were caught red handed at Bangabazar, Phulbaria and Gulistan areas.
"We've arranged security at our own costs to protect the shoppers from their clutches," he added.
"Activities of snatchers around the city shopping areas have increased alarmingly in recent days, which is a grave concern to the traders and shoppers," Secretary of Bangladesh Dokan Malik Samity Md Akhtaruzzaman Manju told the FE.
Law-enforcing agencies have become more cautious than before against the backdrop of some incidents of mugging in last seven days in the capital city.
During the special drives over the last few weeks, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) rounded up 25 muggers, including two women pickpockets.
When contacted, Joint Commissioner (detective branch) of DMP Monirul Islam said they have stepped up security in the capital, especially around the shopping areas, to catch the criminals.
He said the DMP has intensified police patrolling and set up check-posts at various key points in the capital to ensure security in the metropolitan areas.
Monir urged the people who are becoming the targets of silent extortion either to immediately inform the nearest police or contact the DMP over hotlines - 0171339826-9/01191001100/01191001111.
They can even provide information even without their identity, Joint Commissioner Monir said, adding that a special team of plainclothes police keep their eyes open to hunt muggers who commit the crimes in and around commercial banks.
Besides, the country's elite force -- Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) also deployed more than 5,000 members at different bus terminals, market places, launch terminals and railway stations to nab such groups.
Local human rights bodies also expressed their deep concern over sudden increase in the incidence of mugging in the city just several days before the biggest festival of Muslims.
A director of Odhikar, a rights group, said people are now afraid of coming out of their homes due to lawlessness.
"The situation cannot be improved by just deploying additional policemen as some unscrupulous law enforcers are also involved in such offences," he added.
