A senior US official said that al Qaeda deputy chief, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman had been killed in a drone strike on August 22.

The official, who wished to remain anonymous said al-Rahman was killed in Pakistani tribal region of Waziristan. There was a US drone strike in the area corresponding with the date mentioned by the US official.

Al-Rahman is believed to have risen to the No. 2 position in the al Qaeda chain of command after US forces had killed its leader, Osama bin Laden in a covert raid on a compound in Pakistani town of Abbottabad in early May.

The then second in command, Ayman al Zawahiri took over reigns of the terror outfit, paving way for al-Rahman to be promoted.

It is believed that Zawahiri along with much of senior al Qaeda and Taliban leadership are hiding in the mountainous tribal regions of Pakistan that border Afghanistan.

A former CIA station chief who had been posted in Islamabad, while giving an exclusive interview to Express 24/7 said that he believed no one in the Pakistani leadership had knowledge of Osama bin Laden hiding in Abbottabad.

Good reason to justify drone attacks. When people did not challenge the claim of OBL killing, then who mai ka laal will refute above claim?

Al-Qaeda’s No. 2 killed in Pakistan: US official
AP (15 minutes ago) Today
WASHINGTON: Al-Qaeda’s second-in-command, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman, has been killed in Pakistan, delivering another big blow to a terrorist group that the US believes to be on the verge of defeat, a senior Obama administration official said Saturday.

The Libyan national who was the network’s former operational leader rose to al-Qaeda’s No. 2 spot after the US killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden during a raid on his Pakistan compound in May.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said last month that al-Qaeda’s defeat was within reach if the US could mount a string of successful attacks on the group’s weakened leadership.

”Now is the moment, following what happened with bin Laden, to put maximum pressure on them,” Panetta said, ”because I do believe that if we continue this effort we can really cripple al-Qaeda as a major threat.”

Al-Rahman was killed Aug. 22 in the lawless Pakistani tribal region of Waziristan, according to the official, who insisted on anonymity to discuss intelligence issues.

The official would not say how al-Rahman was killed. But his death came on the same day that a CIA drone strike was reported in Waziristan. Such strikes by unmanned aircraft are Washington’s weapon of choice for killing terrorists in the mountainous, hard-to-reach area along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Al-Rahman, believed to be in his mid-30s, was a close confidant of bin Laden and once served as bin Laden’s emissary to Iran.

Al-Rahman was allowed to move freely in and out of Iran as part of that arrangement and had been operating out of Waziristan for some time, officials have said.

Born in Libya, al-Rahman joined bin Laden as a teenager in Afghanistan to fight the Soviet Union.

After Navy SEALs killed bin Laden, they found evidence of al-Rahman’s role as operational chief, US officials have said.

I hope we can get more than a US official's word on this, they have already been caught lying when they said Pakistan gave the stealth's helicopter rear end to the Chinese; as well as numerous other times.

I would like the Drone strikes to end in Pakistan but when such news appears, it justifies the use of these strikes in the eyes of its supporters.

The best solution is for PA itself to hunt down all these Al Qaeda terrorists in the northern areas because otherwise we would continue to be bombed as all these shameless terrorists are holed up here.

Yes, IF just terrorists are getting killed there, but reality is far different from what these US officials claim. We have to believe whatever they say and have to live with it. It is quiet interesting that whenever questions about drones are raised, US officials come up with the killing of number two / three of Al Qaeda. If he was killed on 22nd what were they waiting for to air this news till today?

And yes, PA should take the action, but for what? and against whom? It is just like it is declared that T-Faz and S.M.R are terrorist, and PA is asked to take action against us. PA knows well and it takes action in its own way. PA has continuously been asking to provide them the information, they will take the action, but lame excuse of distrust is given. WTH?

The problem is that no one in Pakistan can challenge America because of our pathetic state and reliance upon them.

To end drone strikes, PA has to target known individuals linked to organizations that present an imminent threat.

The situation is such that Pakistan is is no position to ask for the end to Drone strikes, worst is that they are approved by the Gov and the army.

If this news is authentic, then Al-Qaida is very much a going concern in Pakistan - and unfortunately, this will once again bring into question, just exactly what kind of efort the Pakistan army is involved in - because apparently there is an enabling atmosphere for Al-Qaida, in Pakistan

All hail the drones!

PA does challenge US, i mean CIA, it is not surfaced but it does. At the very outset who is this Atiyah Abdul Rehman? a libyan born and a terrorist declared by US state department? All the evidences proving these kind of people terrorist are lying underground with US, which are yet to be shown to world, but which world? who damn care about these type of people.

Have you ever seen dead bodies of people dying out of drone attacks? it is nothing but burnt like coal. So they will keep claiming that they have killed No1. / No2 and No3 of Al Qaeda... which is nothing but a ghost organization, created by US to keep its presence in our region.

This ghost organization is actually a prevalent mentality and it can seep anywhere into the Muslim world.

The thing is that Pakistan could never really get anything out of US, all that can be done is from this end.

Its up to the agencies to control and cleanse this country, otherwise we have given everyone too many reason to be here forever and bomb everything.
