‘Al Qaeda leadership almost wiped out from Pakistan’: Report

Senior British officials believe that the senior members of al Qaeda might be moving towards North Africa after being weakened in Pakistan and a “last push” in 2012 may definitely destroy the remaining al Qaeda leaders in Pakistan, said a report by The Guardian on Monday.

The report quoted one official as saying that the “intense campaign” of unmanned drone strikes has successfully killed many al Qaeda leaders in Pakistan and “only a handful of key players” are left alive.

Fearing that North Africa might become the new “theatre of jihad” soon, some well-informed sources told The Guardian that “two relatively senior al Qaeda figures have already made their way to Libya, with others intercepted en route”.

One source said, “A group of very experienced figures from North Africa left camps in Afghanistan’s [north-eastern] Kunar province where they have been based for several years and travelled back across the Middle East… Some got stopped but a few got through.”

A British official, while commenting on the presence of al Qaeda leaders in West Asia, told the newspaper, “I think they are really very much weakened… You can’t say they don’t pose a threat – they do – but it’s a much lesser one.”

British and US intelligence sources told the The Guardian that there are an estimated 100 “al Qaeda or al Qaeda-affiliated” militants in Afghanistan, of whom only “a handful” were seen to pose a threat internationally to the UK or other western nations.

More wars in North Africa (Libya, Egypt, other parts) after terrorists wiped out from Pakistan.

A job well done by pakistan. But now they must maintain this status and prevent aq from making a comeback

Let's be blunt: Pakistan has to eliminate every last vestige of Al Qaeda from its territory. Pakistani complaints of sovereignty violations after May 2nd met no echo in the U.N. or elsewhere. That's because under the post-9/11 U.N. Security Council resolutions (especially 1373) Pakistan has the binding sovereign obligation to eliminate terrorists, terror havens, and terror-training camps from its territory. Willful blindness or compliance with terrorists = no claims to sovereignty.

So as long as Al Qaeda has a refuge in Pakistan it's an invitation for others to invade Pakistan to get at them.

Pakistan is facing wars of many fronts. From foreign sponsored terrorism to politics.
Pakistan Army is fighting with low morale, low supplies, low ammunition, low technology and low fuel.
You cannot expect any other arrogant armies in the world to fight in these conditions, which luckily we are doing. We have the highest efficiency than all armies in the world fighting terrorism. Even more than US army. Better be grateful to those who have taken a deep strike in their economy and sacrificed thousands of lives of soldiers and civilians not only to eliminate the terror in region, but directly or indirectly, global terrorism.
So as long as Al Qaeda has a refuge in Pakistan it's an invitation for others to invade Pakistan to get at them.

Al Qaeda has nearly no one operating in Pakistan. The operations are from their safe heavens in Afghanistan, which must be targeted first by your military. Anyways, you didn't invade and attack on any terrorist recently, in fact killed those who are the biggest warriors in the war against terrorism.

It's sad to see ignorant who talk like think tanks of Pentagon.

I know. Yet picking and choosing your terrorist allies is not allowed. Besides, these guys still turn against Pakistani civilians and soldiers, either directly or by giving shelter to others who do. It's a nightmare for Pakistan so why does it continue? So the military has an excuse to dominate the state? To nurture the future terrorist leaders of Afghanistan or a new insurgency in Kashmir? Are these causes really worth the suffering they cause within Pakistan and without?

Is that what you were taught at kindergarten?
Please provide any authentic source or proof excluding your paranoid neighbor.

The sooner you open your eyes, the better.

You're telling us the US doesn't use terrorists to further its personnel agendas on a much, much larger scale? Mhm... how about defining 'terrorist' for me too.

What is your question?

Terrorist = someone engaged in the extrajudicial, systematic, and deliberate use or threat of violence against civilian noncombatants. Note that this definition is broad enough to include coercion by organized crime but excludes crimes against property that lack the personal violence component.

The bold part of your post.
"To nurture the future terrorist leaders of Afghanistan or a new insurgency in Kashmir?"

Sure. My speculation has its roots in Hussein Haqqani's book, Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military, where he recalls, often from his position as note-taker at meetings, the strategy of the P.A. in Kashmir: encourage an anti-India movement, then employ terrorists to knock off the leaders who want an independent Kashmir in favor of groups controlled by the ISI who favor union with Pakistan.
