American Grammy award-winning singer Akon, who will visit Pakistan to kick off the World Soccer Stars event, has joined in the campaign to collect donations for the Diamer-Bhasha and Mohmand dams.

In a video shared on World Soccer Star twitter handle, Akon said: “This is a special message to all Pakistanis around the world. According to a United Nations report, water resources in the country will dry up by 2025, so I’m asking all Pakistanis living in the country and overseas to support the Diamer and Bhasha dam. So we can mobilise Pakistan into a better future.”

Earlier in another video on Sunday, the singer had given a shout out to Prime Minister Imran Khan. “Yo, Imran Khan, It’s ya boy Akon, I’m looking forward to coming to Pakistan, are you ready for me,” he states.

Thanks @Akon for the amazing message for PM Pakistan @ImranKhanPTI

The singer will be heading to the country to commence the World Soccer Stars event, with his concerts scheduled in Karachi and Lahore from April 26 to 29.

The World Soccer Stars event on January 10 brought football legends Ricardo Kaka and Luis Figo to the country for the purpose of launching the tournament.

If the money he got from Pakistanis to see him will be given to dam fund , that would seem sincere .

Between that whole idea of dam funding from the people is really sick , Sara Paisa corruption ki nazar kar k or kala bagh dam py bahany bana k hamare politicians ny mulk ko esi jagah khara kr dia k ab apni hi awaam se bheek maangty phir rahy hain hamen hi qarzaai kar k .. wtf

Sorry to sound so pessimistic. This dam fund idea is a noble cause, but it was obvious from the start that it would never actually translate to a large enough sum of money to do much with. Rs9 billion is barely scratching the surface of what's needed, and it seems fund raising momentum which wasn't enough to begin with is evaporating.

One thing that has worried me about this dam fund is that it may become and excuse for lazy and idiotic leaders to dodge responsibility, thereby evading actual efforts to secure funding and begin planning for the water crisis. It seems nobody is talking about the crisis, and anyone that is cites this meagre sum of money as if it will make any difference at all.

DESK REPORT

Akon's active on the energy front in Africa so it's no surprise he's supporting other efforts to save natural resources!

Looks like Akon's pretty invested in his upcoming trip to Pakistan for the launch of World Soccer Stars.

Not only is he performing at a string of concerts in Karachi and Lahore, he also sent a video message to PM Imran Khan just to just say hi and now he's asking his fans in Pakistan to donate to the fund for the Diamer-Bhasha Dam's construction!

He says in a now-viral video, “This is a special message to all Pakistanis around the world. According to a United Nations report, water resources in the country will dry up by 2025. So I’m asking all Pakistanis living in the country and overseas to support the Diamer and Bhasha dam. So we can mobilise Pakistan into a better future.”

Sources say that Akon didn't charge for the PSA and was on board when TouchSky Group's CEO Ahmer Kunwar (who are organising WSS) suggested that he record a video about the dam.

According to Kunwar, "I advised Akon about the serious issues of water supply that Pakistan has. We discussed the way the message needed to be projected and made sure he was educated about the whole process."

Akon is quite active on the energy front in Africa, where his Akon Lighting Africa is installing solar power systems in 25 countries. So it doesn't come as surprise that he agreed to support other efforts to conserve natural resources!
