MUZAFFARABAD: In a dramatic action, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) police nabbed seven suspected terrorists, carrying arms and Elite Police fatigues in less than 20 minutes after a tip-off on Monday.
Police sources told Dawn that the suspects, who were riding a white colour double cabin pickup bearing Lahore registration, were first spotted in Chehla Bandi neighbourhood that marks the end of the capital’s municipal limits towards the north, along the road to Neelum valley.
On being alerted by someone, the police set up pickets on several exit points.
However, the panicked riders drove towards the Pir Chinasi Road, where the police got hold of them after a brief chase, sources said.
Surprisingly, the suspects did not put up any resistance and instead surrendered themselves to the police without any trouble, sources added.
Five of the suspects belonged to Punjab and one each to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and AJK.
They were identified as Mohammad Usman (Narowal), Mohammad Afzal and Abdul Ghufoor (Bahawalnagar), Abdul Hafeez (Arifwala), Mohammad Ajmal (Multan), Saeed Akhtar (Havelian) and Mohammad Fayyaz (Sharda).
Police also recovered from them two AK assault rifles, one pistol, 40 rounds of ammunition and two trousers of Elite Police.
Sources said the suspects were booked under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, Section 13/20/65 of the Arms Act, 170-171 and some other sections of the Penal Code.
When contacted by Dawn, SSP Muzaffarabad Irfan Masood Kashfi confirmed the arrests but declined to share details.
“We are investigating them to ferret out the facts,” he said.
