Munshiganj, Jan 31 (bdnews24.com) – Daylong clashes between police and demonstrators protesting the proposed Bangabandhu International Airport in Munshiganj has left a policeman killed and over 40 people injured.

Doctors at Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital declared sub-inspector Matiur Rahman, 45, dead when he, along with his four fellows, was brought to the hospital around 2:45pm on Monday.

However, there was no official statement on the death from the police.

Inspector general of police Hassan Mahmood Khandker, while visiting the injured police personnel at the hospital, said that tough steps would be taken against the attackers.

Correspondents of Bengali daily Prothom Alo and private TV channel ATN News and several other local correspondents were also injured in the clashes.

Munshiganj police superintendent Shafiqul Islam told bdnews24.com that traffic on Dhaka-Mawa highway resumed around 4pm after hours of disruption due to the demonstrations.

He said additional police and Rapid Action Battalion members had been deployed in the area. "The situation is now under control."

The protestors took to the street at Srinagar Bazaar in the morning in response to a call by Arial Beel Protection Committee and blocked the highway around 7am, halting long-distance traffic.

The demonstrators have been demanding that the airport project site be relocated from the district, claiming that thousands of people would be left unemployed if the project is implemented.

Around 11,250 acres of land is needed for the project estimated to cost Tk 500 billion. Dhaka and Munshiganj districts administrations have been assigned to acquire the land stretching into Munshiganj's Sreenagar Upazila and Dhaka's Nababganj and Dohar Upazilas.

Shajahan Badal, general secretary of the protection committee, told bdnews24.com that the demonstration was called protesting the case filed against 4,026 people over the clash between law enforcers and protesters, who were on their way to join a rally at Muktangan in Dhaka on Jan 26.

DAY'S TURMOIL

Around 500 police personnel were deployed in Munshiganj in the morning, who, according to witnesses, discouraged vehicle movement in the area.

Sreenagar police chief Shakhawat Hossain told bdnews24.com that the agitators turned violent when the law enforcers tried to disperse them from the highway around noon. At one point, they attacked the law enforcers, triggering the clash.

The police personnel, as said by Hossain, were compelled to charge batons and fire rubber bullets on the demonstrators as they had been hurling brickbats. At least 42 people were injured at that time.

He said a group of unruly protesters set fire to Hasara police camp around 1pm. The fire was doused immediately.

By 11am, they took position on different points of the highway in between Chhanbari and Kuchiamor areas.

ATTACK ON PROTESTERS

Locals said around 15,000 people from adjacent Keutkhali, Karikhali, Laskarpur, Alampur and Nidarpur areas, carrying sharp weapons, brought out a procession around 12noon.

They shouted slogans demanding expulsion of local MP Sukumar Ranjan Ghosh.

They locked into clashes with the law enforcers when the law enforcers tried to bar them.

At one stage, more police, led by executive magistrate Shafiul Islam, were deployed in the area and they immediately started firing teargas shells and spraying hot water on the demonstrators.

The demonstrators chased the police when water canons and the stock of teargas shells ran out around 1pm.

The police personnel then started retreating.

But the demonstrators managed to attack some of the police personnel on a car. They vandalised the car and beat up the police personnel with rods and sticks.

They also vandalised a water canon.

ATTACK ON JOURNALISTS

The demonstrators attacked the journalists while chasing the police around 1pm.

The motorcycle of Prothom Alo correspondent Golam Mortuza was torched. The demonstrators beat him up severely with sticks.

He was admitted to Dhaka's Trauma Centre with serious injuries.

Several other photojournalists were also assaulted.

BTW this is the 7 billion dollar airport. the airport which was supposed to benefit all.

The present international airport runway can be extended to accomodate larger jets, a new runway can be added for a larger traffic and the building that contains customs, immigration, passanger lounges and others can also be redesigned and rebuilt, probably in the south.

To enlarge the runway length, the GoB can buy the lands and houses in the north and south. In order to build another 3rd runway in the west, GoB can acquire land there, too. These three runways can then be connected for taxiing and other purposes.

If it is a new airport, then the GoB should go to Aricha and aquire the required amount of land inside the river Jamuna, reclaim the area by filling with soil, and build an international airport there. Aricha is less than 100 km away from Dhaka. With Aricha, govt does not have to buy paddy lands in Arial Beel.

However, I will prefer the renovation of the existing airport. If AL govt starts spending money to purchase such a big land in Arial Beel, the price of 1 kg rice will shoot up to Taka100. It is already Tk55/kg, although Princess Hasina had promised a Taka10/kg rice in her election promise.

Khaleda demands scrapping airport

Tue, Feb 1st, 2011 10:20 pm BdST

Dhaka, Feb 1 (bdnews24.com) — BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia has demanded that the airport construction at Arrial Beel in Munshiganj be scraped.

"Dhaka already has an international airport, of which only 27 percent is being used. We do not need another airport," she said on Tuesday evening at a meeting with the hopefuls of Dhaka Bar Council elections at her Gulshan office.

The pro-BNP lawyers were led by president candidate Masud Ahmed Talukder and general secretary aspirant Iqbal Ahmed.

Khaleda reiterated her solidarity with the local people in the Beel area, saying, "BNP has always been with the people, and will be there in the future."

She also demanded that the government must stop grabbing people's lands to build the airport.

The demonstrators have been demanding that the airport project site be relocated elsewhere, claiming that thousands of people would be displaced and left unemployed if the project is implemented.

Around 11,250 acres of land is needed for the project , which is estimated to cost Tk 500 billion. Dhaka and Munshiganj districts administrations have been assigned to acquire the land stretching into Munshiganj's Sreenagar Upazila and Dhaka's Nababganj and Dohar upazilas.

The former prime minister criticised the government's case against the opposition. "The government is unable to feed the people or to provide gas. It's committing numerous murders. They are the ones who should be charged with cases."

Khaleda at a meeting with pro-BNP lawyers on Saturday said the airport project was meant to name it after 'someone', obliquely referring to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. "There is no need for a new airport."

She also alleged that the main reason behind setting up another airport was to 'plunder hundreds of billions of taka'.

The case was filed against Khaleda and 3,000 unnamed people on charges of instigating Monday's violence in Munshiganj that left a policeman dead and many people injured.

We have also two other international airport. One in Sylhet and other in Chittagong. If Bangladesh government improve this two airport then we will not need another airport for another 10 to 15 years. Bangladeshi should not allow this brainless government to waste people hard earn money.

waste of money....no public interest in here..only to enrich the pocket of some individuals...

When an independent MP wanted to discuss protest and brutality because of Awami regime proposed airport, Speaker of the parliament in presence of PM Sheikh Hasina not only declared the discussion irrelevant but also expunged his statement from Parliament session transcript. Is there any more proof needed that this is a Awami League “rubber stamp” Parliament?

YouTube - Irrelevant Subject

.
BNP and AL, whenever they are out of power, do not attend the Parliamentary sessions. They only go on those days when to draw their salaries. This is the reason why a Speaker can do whatever he likes. A continuous participation in the Parliament is necessary for the democratic culture to flourish in the Parliament and in the country. If the ruling party does anything undemocratic in the Parliament, then the population will know it quickly.

.
In principal, yes all members should be in parliament.

In practice, when the Speaker of the house term important issue involving hundreds of thousands of people, their life and livelihood as irrelevant, participation of opposition at that point is just meaningless.

"Dhaka already has an international airport, of which only 27 percent is being used.

These days corruption has taken a new dimension which atleast make it look legitimate. Corrupt leaders negotiate with foreign companies for various projects, often funded by loans and get their kick backs in swiss accounts. Getting rich was never so easier,.

Its not the runway but the terminal needs major overhaul. The current facility in the existing airport is just a piece of $hit. Also the presence of airport is a major hindrance to the expansion of Dhaka city. We definitely need a international standard airport owned and managed by private company. That is waht govt is doing not spending a single penny other than the land. It will bring 7 billion dollar worth of FDI and will significantly increase the economic activities to that area. Not only that, once a company invest 7 billion dollar then they will definitely market the airport and bring new businesses to the country. It will have a positive chain affect to the overall economy of the country. I strongly support this new airport.

I also support the protester who are seeking adequate compenstaion so that they could be rehabilitated and find the livelihood somewhere else. Only a tiny fraction of 7 billion dollar could be disbursed to them and they will be more than happy. I also support the crack down of BNP goons and propaganda only to politicize the whole project and fish out of mud water. Army can be depoloyed if necessary. A strong government is essential for the development and future of the country and AL is failing in every respect in containing those unruly situation.

A famous Urdu saying goes like this: Laaton ke bhoot baaton se nahin maante. Appropriate for this monkey government. Only the kick and danda can fix this government. People of Munshigonj showed La-Hasian how it's get done. Rest of the nation should follow their foot steps and kick them munafiq dalal from power.

My salute to people of Munshigonj. :police:

More Awami then La-Hasina herself. Congratulation. :partay:

Current airport in Dhaka with one runway using only 30-40% of its capacity. That is way below and can be greatly increased.

Airport needed upgrade of its old radar and runway lighting urgently to and get away from instrument mode of operation. These two steps alone will greatly enhance the airport capability.

Airport already has land for constructing second runway but Hasian's relative (father in law of her daughter) and manpower minister is in business venture to take this airport land for his hotel/resort business.

Airport terminal can also be redesigned and enhanced without much trouble.

These are immidiately available options mentioned by various expert many times that will make this airport sufficient enough for next 10-15 years. But Awami regime goal is just put the name of Hasina's father on main airport and loot billons for it.
