Airbus Defence and Space (DS) has conducted 'buddy-buddy' refuelling of the A400M Atlas airlifter during capability-expansion trials flown out of the Seville production and testing facility in southern Spain, the company announced on 14 November.

Two flights were flown involving a pair of A400Ms, during which 50 contacts were made between the centreline hose and drum unit (HDU) of the tanker, and the probe of the receiver. This HDU station would typically be used to refuel large aircraft, with the two wing-top pods being used for fast jets and helicopters.

As noted by Airbus DS, the A400M has a basic fuel capacity of 63,500 litres which can be increased with two extra cargo hold tanks carrying 7,200 litres each, and can refuel from the HDU at a rate of 2,000 litres (600 US gallons) per minute.

To date, Airbus DS has delivered 33 of its 174-aircraft orderbook.
